Wanting to stretch my writing muscles, I was recently inspired by something a friend wrote for NaNoWriMo. With his knowledge, I am writing a story set in his world, Iconic Earth. The problem is, I don't know what genre it falls in.
In what genre would you place this work, Call of the West?
Shoot Out at High Noon... in Omaha?
Peter Lofton had a gorgeous girlfriend, a well-paying job, and a dog that loved him. He was mostly satisfied with his life, but deep in his heart, he longed for something more--something greater than himself.
After rescuing an old man from bikers, Peter gets his wish. He finds out that "Carbine Charlie" is a Cowboy, a member of one of the four Iconic groups whose image and stereotype have become more important than their reality. Along with Ninjas, Pirates, and Knights, the Iconic Cowboys fulfill a deep need in the human psyche even though modern mundanes will never see them as they are for the Haze hides their true identities. As an Iconic, Peter must always act as a Cowboy though he is free to decide which kind of Cowboy he wants to be. His thoughts and actions will turn him into a Lawman, Mysterious Stranger, Black Hat, Gentleman, or even something else. But God help him if he becomes a Singing Cowboy.
With Charlie and Juniper Jean Carter, Cowgirl extraordinaire, Peter goes on the trail of outlaw Ike Deegan and his gang of Black Hats. There, Peter discovers that his path has crossed Deegan's many years before. For a Cowboy, it's never revenge, but it is time for a reckoning.
