I had an idea a little while ago, while reading several Boxcar Children books, about a YA time-travel series. I probably won't write it for a while (definitely not until after my current novel is done), but I thought I'd run it by you guys anyway.
The premise of the series is that one day these kids and some sort of mentor figure come upon this woman who is being attacked by some sort of creature. They save her from the creature, but the creature unfortunately gets away.
The woman thanks them for saving her, and explains that she is the guardian of time. The creature who attacked her is the servant of an evil being/lord who seeks to change history to his own ends. The only way he can succeed, however, is with a special device owned by the woman. While he hasn't gotten it yet -- and the woman refuses to give it to him -- the creature who just got away did manage to steal a stone that will let the being's minions travel through time and become part of the times they travel to. While they cannot change time to the extent the being wants, they might be able to persuade important historical figures to act differently -- the result being massive chaos for the time stream the woman supports, which the being most likely hopes will persuade her to surrender the device.
The kids and mentor ask if they can help. She says that, under normal circumstances, they would not be able to, due to restrictions on use of the time stream. But, she says, the circumstances are not normal, and plus she is indebted to them for saving her life. So she agrees to let them help her. She gives them each special rings, fitted with the same kind of stone as the one the creature captured, but with added enhancements that will help them fight the being's minions in order to frustrate their attempts to change history.
The series would have the kids traveling to various points in history and learning lessons about both history and life from them. Meanwhile, they are also fighting the creatures, and at some point, they will end up having to face the creatures' boss.
Essentially, my idea for this would be like a Christian version of The Boxcar Children (a series I love) mixed with time travel and some historical fiction elements (as well as probably some inspiration from the old Hanna-Barbara series The Greatest Adventure: Stories From the Bible and a kids' series I've read a bit of called Rainbow Magic, about two girls who help these fairies out against their enemy Jack Frost). What do you guys think?
