I really like what BeckyMinor said about seeing good movies or reading good literature, but not being too heavily influenced by them. That happens to me as well, but in a different way. If I see something I disagree with, or I don't like, I try to think of how I could fix it.
But also people, like Pixiedust (forgive me if I got names a little bit wrong--I've lurked for a long time, but never paid attention to profile details) said. I don't know why, but sometimes I'll just see someone, and think, "That person belongs in a novel." Or if something funny happens--as small as wind blowing the door open and startling me, to an unidentified shadow crossing my face for a minute, I'll try and think about how it could work in a story. Soundtracks are awesome for sparking creativity also.
