I've already virtually written a book, which is in the last stages of editing. And I've decided to continue the general theme (very general), and make another book like it. I've always wanted to take a machine gun back in time, and this allows me to do it by proxy!
So far, I've come up with this much:
Premise...
Multiple characters from different timelines/epochs coming together in another world. They are temporarily tied to the fate of this other world, and must defend it from the Great Evil. Cultural clashes and interpersonal conflicts to be expected.
Characters...
Adalric (old Germanic name), a young soldier on the wrong side of the Second World War, who can speak fluent English. He is very confused with the ideals and beliefs of his country, and would only like out of it all. He's actually got a bible his parents saved for him, but doesn't understand it, yet. Lost his parents in a counter-raid.
Jokter, a teenager off the streets, whom the government program decided to place in a backwoods town for the summer. He's from around 2010, give or take, and is bored out of his mind, waiting for something to happen. Parents out of the picture.
Serénah'í, a young woman in another world, who is believed to possess the wisdom of the ancient "sea-peoples." Maybe she does, but if she can't even answer her own questions.... With a diplomatic and tyrannous father, and a barely alive mother, her future seems bleak.
Biggyborg, a dwarf of the other world. A legendary old warrior, turned hermit after his own country rejected him. He has forgotten too much, and shall soon be aroused beyond his comfort zone.
Okénúk (Soul of Freedom), a creature with free will (in t'other world), created through evil processes. The curse on his/its mind has been broken, and his destiny is unwritten. Well, maybe God knows it, but we don't.
Plot...
Adalric is stuck defending a town in the Ardennes forest from the greedy Americans. He finds a refuge in a cave, and inadvertently stumbles into a portal. His retreat is sealed off, and he continues forward, and finds himself on a mountainside overlooking a massive plains. He scouts around, and sees a city on the plains, and a great badlands across his mountain range. He soon meets up with Biggyborg, and gets what information the latter can give him, which is too little. They set out for a city on the plains (Maybe not yet?), to find out more, and also to tell the inhabitants of the evil that lurks beyond the mountains. Perhaps they should travel into the badlands and get a closer look at them, and find the evil before they go to the city.
Suggestions appreciated here. I think the dwarf's legendary weapon is in the city, and he needs to go there to retrieve it. But I think they need plenty of information about the danger close at hand before they go there, and the dwarf hasn't seen it yet. He's been a hermit for about a century, and out of the loop, and the German is new to the territory.
Meanwhile, Jokter, trapped as a helper in a general store, listens to endless stories about random events past in the town he's in. Finally, he hears a story that sounds interesting: The Ghost of the Mucklemuck Mine. He finds that an old abandoned mine holds a ghost, and determines to see it. He sets out at night, and meets the ghost, and is transported to the other world through the mine/cave, like Adalric. He ends up in the same time and general place as the German, but I'm open to suggestions on this as well. My best thought, so far, is he lands near the city that is the goal of the two warriors. He meets up with Serénah'í, and "falls in love," but is completely rejected by her father, and partially rejected by herself. She wants to learn more about him and his world, but is confused by his ways and attitude.
Worlds...
Our Earth, WWII, 194(3?). Ardennes Forest, Belgium. Supposed to be virtually correct as we know it. Not much mentioned about it.
Our Earth, 2010. Not really any place or exact time. Small town in a valley, very like Green Acres. The people are very backwards, and aren't connected with change. They have a big legend/legends about the ghost, but don't normally tell others about it. Nothing has really happened there for years, or decades. The mine is a portal to the other world.
Other Earths. Beginning of Time, to End of days. Alternate Earths, more or less, which are all connected to the Other Earth, specific. All have caves which are portals, and all have the same general creation/fall/redemption story. Politically incorrect, of course. Creatures, and soulful beings, and spirits, all can travel from other worlds to this Other Earth, specific. As far as I've thought, they are not connected to each other directly, but you could go from one, to Other Earth, to another.
Other Earth. About two millennia after the Redemption. Virtually the same size and make-up of Our Earth, but with vastly different landmass shapes and configurations. The Flood happened during the fall, not after. Or maybe during the Redemption.... There are many different creatures populating the Earth, similar to our own, but not the same. Great herds on the plains, solitary hunters, mythical beasts, and others. In the part of the world we shall see, there is a mountain range, East/West. North of it, there is a plains, and a city by a river. South of it, there is a badlands, and a North/South mountain range splitting it. The badlands, and the splitting-range, are the strongholds of the Enemy.
The Enemy...
A coalition of great prophets and disciples (There is no un-evil magic in this world, which is my belief for ours, as well.), who turned against their Creator, and started being evil magicians, servants of the greater enemy. Their turning was the Fall, and they ruled the earth for millennia. As long as He strove with them as Himself, they could keep Him from that world. Mostly. His Seven Spirits were still free to come and go as they willed. But their Creator pulled a trick out of His Eternal Sleeve, and came among them as one of them. They killed Him, thereby breaking their own power of their lords and masters, the First Turners. In a titanic spiritual struggle at the time of His death, the entire earth was remade, and the continents were undone from their moorings.
In the aftermath, the band of magicians is scattered, and they still hold sway over many lands, but have not the true power to do so. In many places, they are resisted, but few dare to fight them openly. The faction near our story are greatly weakened from a century-old war, but are regathering their strength. They dwell in the badland-mountains, and are breeding a colossal army of twisted creatures to serve them. Only those who believe in the power of the Creator and His Son can hope to defeat them, and most of the people of this world have lost that knowledge and hope. But the people of this land and city have nearly forgotten the threat to themselves, because of the defeat of the Enemy a century earlier.
Enemy's army...
Dragons of many different kinds. Certain ones are kamikaze "melters," that run up to you, explode in a cloud of white smoke, and suck you into themself, along with anything living near you, and create a conglomerate creature, that serves evil. Okénúk is one of those created creatures.
The created creatures. They are all different, and have the attributes of the creatures used to create them. The dragon, a Rontulum, and three little Cotchits, makes a creature that is a lizard-buffalo-bushtitbird mix. At night, these creatures can morph into nearly pure forms of their different base forms.
Twisted men, who are not of the same stuff as the great magicians. They are some from different worlds, that got trapped in this one by the magicians. They are the keepers and trainers of the experimental creatures, and some are lieutenants and powerful leaders. They are the proxy-rulers for the magician-ruled lands.
Various other creatures, that are native to different climates, and subservient to the magicians and their men.
That's about it for now, though I have some other things and ideas I haven't posted here. Thanks for any feedback you can/might give me.
