Thanks, everyone. I'm playing around with ideas for the sequel, now. Am NOT using this cover, as it features art borrowed from a source at DeviantArt, and is just an experiment to play with the effect. But I wanted to know what people thought of the basic concept. Attachments:

Hey, that looks cool. Too bad you can't use that artwork, because the painty-ness of the image contrasts with the uber-texture of the frame.

It is cool. I think it's a fairly original idea; I don't recall seeing much cover art based on a "paste-into" scheme. The textured background actually becomes part of the content. Since the painting seems to be inside the background, the cover is coherent and immersive.
I'm assuming that the frame in the textured background is supposed to be the mouth a cave. If so, I think it should be more round; the effect is a little too dramatic as it is. In thumbnail form, the shape almost looks like the head of some kind of a cat-creature or something. Also, I think the title text may be too close to the top of the image.
I like it!

Right on all counts; I was planning on rounding it a bit more, and scooting everything down. This was literally just a first attempt to see if the concept worked. Glad to see it does. It is indeed supposed to be a framing device suggesting the mouth of a cave--looking into the story, as it were. Kessie: I agree; the art works well with the concept. When I find a cover artist, I will be designing the cover around the art, but I'm kind of hoping I can get something that works at least this well.

Oh, nice! And you know, some of the artists at DeviantArt are willing to let you use the art for a one-time fee. You should try messaging them and seeing if they get back to you. People ask to use mine all the time.

Thanks, Pixy. I thought about that, but I'd rather commission something specific to the story, if I can. This one creates a nice mysterious mood, and I like the underworld motif, but the passenger in the boat should be a man, and the boatman a little less human, if I were trying to represent an actual scene from the book. Right now I'm kind of checking out artists who have an interesting style who are in my price range or would be willing to swap services (I am the Associate Managing Editor for the Creation Research Society Quarterly, and do a great deal of editing and proofreading on a number of levels). My friend who did the cover art for the first one was very excited to do another cover for the second, but unfortunately, he passed away not too long ago.

I can't make out the text at all. I think that text should be legible when the cover is displayed at the small size because that is how it will be viewed on Amazon. Otherwise I like it

Did you just look at the first one, or the revised ones I posted further down?
