How about this guy for starters?
Orrin Kamchan – sensible, shy young Warrl* who wanted to study at Temple^ but lacked the funds. He’s trying to earn enough to afford the tests and battling some small bitterness over the unfairness of the archaic system he faces.
*Warrl: people group who make up roughly 1/3 of the population on the fantasy homeworld. They operate on ‘learned’ magic – meaning that spells/powers are latent extensions of their comprehension of what they study. Rigid class structure. Blue-gray skin. Seven-fingered limbs.
^Temple: originally intended as a central place of worship, education gradually took over and now this is the primary source of learning on the homeworld. Every major city has a Temple extension, which all answer to the central one in the Capital City.
