Greetings Anomaleans!
As I said in a post just a minute ago, I've been trapped in one of the vortexes that pop up here and there. Lots of.. well, not fun. Really, I just spent a year deployed with my head up my butt and in the books. I have been busily working through my schoolwork and am now over the half way mark for my bacchelor's degree.
My current kid-count is 4 and holding with all of them adopted and well. My youngest is adorable as ever and the older three have been the anvil against which I am being forged. My marriage is has been refashioned and we are learning to live and learn despite all the troubles and stress we carry.
I currently have orders to Ft Bragg, NC, outside Fayetteville. Is anyone either from there, have contacts there, or live there now? I'd love for my wife and I to meet some of you if possible. Im hoping for orders to Colorado at some point, because I know a lot of Anomaleans live in the area.
TC2 is going stronger than ever. We already have some stories planned out as far as October and are filling issues quickly! At this rate, we will be able to uo the number of high quality stories per issue.
I'll be wanting to do some thought bouncing on the issue of building revenue for TC2, as I want to be abke to pay our authors for their hard work. However, we need the framework to handle the increase in volune thr instant we announce that we pay(whenever that happens). As such, I'dvlike at least two more editors to work under our own Metalikhan and three slush editors, one of whom will be the lead slushi and report directly to me.
I'll also eventually want a publisher, but that is much, much later.
I think that's all. It's good to be back, and, more importantly, the gnomes have gone slack, so I have some work to do!
God bless-- CS!

You have a truly epic life, sir; don't forget that! It is good to hear from you again. The Cross and the Cosmos is indeed doing great. I'm sorry to admit that I've fallen behind with reviewing the stories in the Space Bar. Since I'm doing a "deep read" on something else to hopefully review, I think I'm just going to quit posting reviews of the TC2 stories, although my heart breaks for the authors who will probably receive absolutely no feedback. What are the experience, skill level, and time commitment requirements for volunteering to edit/slush edit?

If I get the numbers Im hoping for, regular editors would need to edit one or two stories per issue. Slush editors would read the stories as they come in and vote, with three votes before the story can move one way or the other.
Does that make sense? Im not quite done formulating how it works just yet and still need to formalize everything.

Alas, I'm up to my chin in slush for another magazine. A friend in town just opened an independent bookstore. She may want to sell the hard copy of C&C anthology on consignment. You can find her here: writtenworldcommunications.com/ (It's Kristine Pratt. She worked for Jeff for a while.) One other thing I discussed with her. The mag I work for is ebook only. She offered to let me do readings, but I didn't think it was fair to say, "Welcome to the bookstore. You can get my book on Amazon." So I came up with the idea of doing a chap book. Our books are also short story compilations. I'll take the story that I contributed and make cheap hard-copies. People can buy them from her store and it'll promote the book online. For in-town folks, the store is in the corner of a strip mall on the SW corner of Oro Blanco and N Carefree. I was there yesterday and it still had a sign for an embroidery shop, but it's really cute. Check it out.

I'm still learning how to edit my own works, let alone anybody else's. Blah! I'm undertaking the epic project of making a really good cover image for Cross and Cosmos.
Someday I'd like to write for you guys! I need to get better first, though. Also I need some ideas that might actually work in short story form. All my ideas tend to turn into sprawling novels. :-)
My hubby was in the Army before we got married. Are you Air Force, if you're going to Ft. Bragg? We live in Cali, so we're in the opposite direction.

I need to get some stuff finished and start submitting some stuff...
I don't know if I'm good enough to be an editor yet, but from the description I'd be very interested in being a slush editor.

Ooo.. sounds great guys! Kessie, Ft Bragg is an Army post, home of the airborne and all that. I'm currently a Sargeant in the Army.
As for you yoda, as soon as I get a chance to write out some guidelines, something I should have done first, I know, then I'll shoot you a PM with the details. I still need at least two more for my plan to work.

I am sure that everyone has heard of the troop draw down, and how the Army is only to retain the best of the very best... well, I'm not it. Not sure how that works, or what they are using to grade by, but I've been told that my services are no longer necessary. When my contract is up at least. That is January, and with all my leave, November with 60 days of free paychecks, so not too bad. So, if anyone knows a job that needs a dedicated(read:obsessed) Linux admin or, better still, Afatds instructor, let me know.
Now, that may sound depressing, and, I suppose, it could be, but let's face it: I'm not the best soldier in the world. On paper at least, and that's all they care about. Paper Soldier to fight paper wars. I am, however, excited about the opportunity to grow in a new way, and to begin life in an environment that will actually appreciate brains over brawn and skill over generic knowledge. This was merely the nail in the coffin for me, as I have wanted out for years.
All that said, elsewhere, my family on all sides are struggling in various ways I won't get to here. My semi-voluntary divorce with the Army will allow us to help heal the bonds broken and soothe the hurts given. In addition, it will allow me to concentrate on my family and on stabilizing it. As a reminder, we adopted four kids about two years ago and while I do not regret it, it has been a monumental challenge for all of us. Really, this is not compatible with military service, and I think God is ensuring that we make it as a family with this move.
Of course, my poor wife is stressing, for obvious reasons. And I can't really do much to comfort her till I have a job lined up and we know what my bennies will look like. Thus the request for a job up there. I'm hoping to get a job basically doing my job now for one of the contracting firms. At least for a little while.
I have lots of other news, but I'll leave it with this for now. The rest, though, is pretty good. God bless you all, and good night

Congratulations on your escape! Life out of the military is pretty nice if you don't mind civilians What part of the country are you looking at settling in?

Howdy,
I've been job-hunting, too. I'm finding Austin has a lot of IT-type jobs.
Good luck on the job hunt!
(: Cindy

Wow, CS--I would say I'm so sorry you fell victim to the military cuts, but it does sound like the Lord is poising you to be able to focus on your family needs in a way that is more workable. I will pray the right opportunity lines up this fall so your wife can feel OK about the stability of the nest. I also pray that whatever the Lord puts in your path to do will be a good fit for your actual gifting. Thanks for letting us know where things stand these days! It's been a wild couple of years for you, for sure.

Austin does have a lot of IT jobs, and several aimed at Linux, which is my.personal favorite. Im pretty sure that His plan involves putting me where we will be uncomfortable for a while, and Im fine with that.

Will be praying Christian Soldier.
As I was contemplating an error I made at work this week, the verse that came to mind was " He works all things to good, for those he loves and calls to his service" I think this may speak into your situation too-though you are not to blame for your situation, unlike me. You will still be "Christian Soldier" even if you leave. the army as you're already a member of another one!
Chris
