Religion has so much power to go bad, we see it in our own world and so I think it would be hard to create a positive religion unless the author has had a positive experience with it???
I thought of Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K Le Guin but they were the "bad guys" Eragon plays with religion a little and the lack there of among his elves. Of course Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials, bashed religion. Unless "religion" is really important to an author, maybe it doesn't show up within his/her works or he/she chooses not to include it or its a given within their story... Or they are creating a story on a smaller scale to focus on one theme like forgiveness or redemption or courage, etc and it tells a story highlighting that aspect but not the whys.
