Since the pen is mightier than the sword, all true fantasy writers should give their pens an appropriate epic-fantasy name.

As a Sci-fi writer, I have no need to rename my pen.
It came labeled "Fisher AG-7"
That's spacey enough as-is, but the "AG" officially stands for "anti-gravity".
I suppose that what we should really re-name is our keyboards, though...

cdeb, your point about having a name that's similar to another author's is a really good reason to use a pseudonym. But Morgan's right about it not protecting your privacy. It's more about branding, as some have mentioned. I know some who write historical romances change their modern American names to old-fashioned British ones so their "brand" better fits the genre.

Interesting, Kristen, about changing one's name to fit with one's brand. I grew up never liking my name (it was not a common name and most of the time I was called Megan). But now I really like it because it fits the fantasy brand perfectly
