Last night, I finished the first draft of my longest short story yet! Weighing in at 19K words, "This Body of Death" will now enter the editing phase. It begins a short time after the close of "New Life."
Derke is progressing in his magic and eager to advance in rank, but Father Phaeus gives him a cryptic warning that not everything is at it seems. As Derke descends deeper into necromancy, he finds indications that Phaeus may be right. Derke must solve the enigma within a puzzle wrapped inside a riddle that is his very existence.

Oooh, very interesting! Is this the necromancer who was trying to hack into the demon-guarded book?

Sure is. Between your suggestion that he talk to the demon and Metalkhin's that he game for it, he got in. Thanks, I wasn't sure how he was going to get it open, and the story required it. I'm talking with Christian Soldier about putting these two stories ("New Life" and "This Body of Death") and two others ("The Strong Survive" and "The Stronger Rule") into a collection for publication.

For a stand-alone story, Derke sure keeps going! Derke started as a minor character who had an interesting story to tell. That story was "New Life." It needed a sequel, thus bringing forth "This Body of Death." The other night, inspiration struck again, and the third Derke story is underway. Currently weighing in at 4,000 words, "Once Called" will bring Derke full circle and remind him that all things work together for good of those who love the Father.
Nugget: A former necromancer hunts the most powerful grimoire which is held by the oldest vampire.
And about the same time, inspiration for a third Granish story struck. After finishing "Once Called," my next short story will be "The Strongest Suffer." 10 years have passed since "The Stronger Rule," and Granish the bard is returning home to stay, but his peaceful life is short lived when an old enemy resurfaces.
Nugget: Returning home, a war-weary bard finds an old, political enemy has new, religious ambitions.

I fear that at 19k you have a novella (or is that novellette), it has outgrown the Short Story category.
Congratulations.
