RE: NanoWriMo (NNWM)
The goal is to bang out a rough first draft in 30 days of consistent writing.
The advice I was given was "give yourself permission to write junk". Just write, don't go back and edit.
What I found is that my inspiration kicked in as I wrote "holistically" much more than when I write cautiously. I got a novel draft v-0.0 which gave me the bones and much of the meat for a novel that I'm polishing now.
The main takeaway is that to hammer out 50,000 words you have to discipline yourself to write a daily "tally of words" every day (or do the make up work to make up the expected cumulative total). I thought of it as a glide-slope, kind of like landing an airplane. You have to hit the cumulative totals in order to finish in the month.
This is how professional authors have to work when they write to a contract with hard promise dates. IMHO it is a discipline we all need to develop. NNWM is a guilt free challenge that allows you to test yourself and get bragging rights when you meet the challenge.
Professional authors tell me that it takes about a year to bring a 100k novel from concept to finished work, with the help of a professional editor for the final cut. So NNWM is a good training ground to start upon.

Also, if you have a couple of projects going on, you can count all of their word counts toward the 50k goal. As long as you wrote all those words during Nano, it counts.
I have a story outlined, but last night I had a brainwave how to wrap up this other story that has been languishing without a final act for a year. I think I'll finish that before I start my new one, and just combine the word counts. It'll be great to tick off that particular check box.

I've found my fiction gets faster with pratice... somewhat..
I've seen the Aroura twice here in Michigan. It's quite rare, but we can see it occasionally. The first time was when I was a kid. It was blue and green and really pretty. Rhe second was earlier this fall, faint white and green, more ethereal this time..

Very cool. Alaska. What part? I took my wife and two younger boys there for a month in 2009. We spent time backcountry in Denali, where we had a grizzly bear adventure. I hope someday to buy a "summer house" in Palmer. Oh, btw, the skull is of a North Carolina black bear. And I just noticed my tag about the heavens, appropriate to the subject of the aurora.

My family loves Alaska--we've been there several times and are going again this summer. I saw the aurora here in Ohio once, many years ago.
