My name is Cheryl and I joined over a year ago, but got sucked into the school vortex, so visiting boards took a back seat. However, I'm set to finish up in January, so now I'm trying to figure out how to function in a world that doesn't revolve around semester plans, syllibuses (syllibi?), due dates, etc. My current writing focuses on the supernatural. Not so much ghosts per se, but along the lines of time--instead of strictly linear time in which past, present, and future are categories, past and present both exist as present and I have characters who can experience past and present side by side.

Howdy,
Similar situation myself. Joined a while ago, but have been sporadic at best in my participation. Pop in, make grandiose claims of how much writing I'm going to do, then vanish for months at a time.
Time is a very interesting subject, but very difficult to handle. Can your characters who experience the past also affect it? Or does it have "do not touch" signs hanging all over it?

Welcome to the board! Sounds like you'd enjoy seasons 5-7 of Doctor Who, because there's a character who is living her own timeline backward. :-) I'd say that was a spoiler, except it's explained in the first episode she appears.

AUGH! Spoilers, Kessie, spoilers! Just kidding, I've already watched that. Anywho, welcome to the boards, Cheryl. Your story sounds interesting....may I take over Kessie's job for a second and invite you to the Anomalous Sandbox (AnomSandbox) over here? groups.yahoo.com/group/AnomSandbox/ It's a protected, non-searchable group where you can get critiques for your writing and give critiques to others. See ya around.

Welcome, Cheryl!
If you want to talk to someone who has experienced something similar to what you're describing for your characters and the emotions/confusion that results - we can chat. I've had some experiences 'seeing' the past while in the present.

Hmm, on rereading your original post it seems to have a relation to a novel I'm stalled on where in a splinter universe people move freely through time but are bound to advance through space (sort of an inversion).
Just need to get into the stream of inspiration and hammer it though, that's my approach.

Thanks for the welcomes. Thanks for the group invite--I'll check it out. rjj7-characters can't influence the past--that's way more complication than I want to handle. . The story focuses more on how the ability to see past/present has complicated the lives of the characters--those who have the ability and those who don't.

Welcome aboard, Cheryl! Sounds like your story is a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey awesomeness. Look forward to hearing more about it!

Sounds like you're really exploring the implications of just seeing the past; and if you're doing that, I think you're right, no need to tack on extra complication. That's actually a great idea. A lot of stories kind of slide around a lot of the deeper elements of time travel. Best of luck.
