Today I wanted to spend a couple of hours writing. That didn't happen. I did everything but write. I went to the store. I read. I cleaned my kitchen. I watched more re-runs of Psych. I went to work. I didn't write a word of what I needed to. Now I want to write but I can't quite get my thoughts to go in one direction. It's like herding cats! So, I'm here at The Anomaly writing about not writing. Anyone else feel like this lately?

That's when you sit down and write a laundry list about what you want to write. And a few crazy things that would NEVER happen in your story. Then you stare at them for a while and wonder how you could actually make those things happen because they're awesome.
In my zombies and unicorns story, everybody's out in the woods in the middle of nowhere. And I want to blow something up. So I've thought long and hard about what to blow up, and how. (One of those little last-chance-for-gas places!)
Then I also started a Sonic the Hedgehog/My Little Pony crossover. It's both hilarious and heartbreakingly serious business at the same time.

Over at Baen's Bar they have a name for what you did Stormy, they call it "Cat Vacuuming".
( just let your imagination chew on that image for a while ).
Now ask yourself, "Am I going to let the Cat win and steal my writing time again today?"
Yours for a lot of dusty cats.

You guys are awesome. I think I'm going to grab my notebook, make some coffee, and start working on my laundry list and vacuum some cats lol.

The last time I vacuumed the cat, it took about 30 minutes, not including the nail trim. The dogs never took more than 5 minutes, except for one old girl who really loved it and did little two-step shimmies the whole time then grumped when I shut the shop vac off. ;D

I can completely relate, Stormiel! In my case I have limited time to write (I have a toddler and an infant) but then when I sit down to actually work on my story, my mind goes a million different ways and I end up on Facebook or Pinterest instead.

focus, focus, focus I've found that I have to block out time to write and force myself to concentrate; it's kind of like taking time to pray every day. The devil get's me going in a million directions in my mind. We have to "pray until we get to praying" (Peter talking about Elijah, free translation). Since our writing is a spiritual calling I think it is the same kind of thing. We have to fight a spiritual battle to focus on our calling day by day if we're to 'git er done'. SGD dave

Yikes! I looked at that and that would be dangerous lol. My problem isnt as much goofing off online (although I love to scroll through this website) as it is getting distracted by a million other things I need to do. Wash the dishes, do the laundry, vacuum the cat... Or I just end up staring at a blank page or rewriting everything I already wrote...

Sounds like you need a bottle of glue for your backside and your chair I have the same problem too (like right now I am here instead of writing lol).

I heard it said that the secret of being a successful author is the discipline to focus on the projects that will be publishable. Er....that reminds me of several that I haven't worked on for a while. Oh, my. I'd better get to it. SGD dave

I would shorten the secret to just what I've quoted, dave. Finishing it, whatever it is, is most important. Trying to figure out what is publishable is nearly impossible. (Case in point, I never though A Star Curiously Singing would be published.) Just write what's on your heart, have it ready, and leave the rest up to God.

ASCS, wow!
I loved that book. Is there a follow on or is that trilogy the end of the series.
It's a fantastic world you created Couragefor..

Never say never! I have some ideas rumbling around that might take place in Sandfly's world, but they aren't fully developed yet. Might need some time to gestate, you know?
In the meantime, I have something, similar in style, that is on the docket for February. (Lord willing.) And then something completely crazy and different that I'm working on now. Maybe half written...?
Thanks for asking!
