... make a fortune selling tickets and popcorn. Ooh. That gave me an idea. #20. In the middle of a showing of The Hobbit, go back in time and change the book to have an ending where Smaug eats Bilbo. Show all the confused people how that is actually the ending of the book. Then, as they head home to check out their own copy, go back in time and change it back to the original ending. (I know, I know. The movie is in multiple parts so we still have to wait to see Bilbo meet Smaug, but work with me here people.) |

Okay, kiddies; (frog on your buddies head, great grandma rising from the dead...sheesh!) Before we get too far out of the world with this, let's establish the theological ground rules for this here madcap time machine.  (What do you mean, Smaug ate Frodo? I didn't see that in the Hobbitt, I thought Gollum ate Frodo!) <<heh, heh, heh>> [ What? No, I do not now, nor have I ever had a time machine in my basement, behind the oil burner. That's just a nasty rumor... {well at least in this timeline anyway}  ] Firstly, are we operating in a mechanistic where that "change one thing and the whole future world changes", "butterfly effect" garbage is controlling the outcomes of time travelling events"? Or, are we in a Theistic creation universe where God rules in the affairs of men and any time traveling is His will to establish and maintain the timeline. (I know that kind of takes the fun out of it.  .) And Secondly: ... um, well... (I know I just had a thought, seems to have vanished out of this timeline. Oops, did I just say that? Is this a quantum event that will make us all dissappear? )Well, that's all the conundrums and rules I can think of. ;D Write on beloved sibs. #21. Go to a swanky restaurant that takes reservations two years in advance, then jump back in time two years, make a reservation, jump back to the present and enjoy your dinner.
Dave: This seems to work on the "linear timeline theory", like Back to the Future, where if you change one thing, you change the future.
I do want to see the anime series Stein;s Gate, about the people who send text messages back in time via a borked-up microwave. They save people from dying, but depart from their original timeline a little with each message, until the hero's little sister gets killed in every single timeline. So they have to figure out how to go back and take back every message.

This seems to work on the "linear timeline theory" If we're going to start making rules, this isn't going to be any fun. I have a very detailed theory of time, but that discussion belongs better in Learned Disputations. So ... #22: Go back in time and delete reply #23 (Sorry, Dave.  ) Re: Back to the Future: A good movie. I'd put it in my top 5 for time travel stories, but when I just watched it recently, I was a bit put off by the language. I didn't remember there being as much as there is. Of course The Time Machine by H.G. Wells has to be in there, and another one is By His Bootstraps by Heinlein. Regardless, the far and away #1 time travel story of all time ... and, IMHO, the best science fiction story ever written is (drum roll): The End of EternityFYI, I have a signed copy of the book. Therefore: #23: Go back in time to hang out with Asimov as he developed that story. Oh, and BTW, the rules Asimov worked out for time travel are pretty detailed and, to the best of my knowledge, became the touchstone for most of the stories that followed. Ooh. Speaking of signed copies. #24: Visit all my favorite authors and get signed copies of their work. Though I imagine people would be skeptical of me claiming a signed copy of Genesis.  |
