Howdy, everyone! Over on Holy Worlds Christian Science-Fiction forum, I started a community project that has grown into the a steampunk space opera setting called the Starsailer project.
In the Starsailer universe, there are many smaller planets in the galaxy, which has a few micro-galaxies orbiting it. Unfortunately though, due to the nature of the elemental make-up of the crusts, these planets have a high risk for massive underground fires that eventually consume so much of the crust that the planet's shell breaks apart, forcing the inhabitants to flee.
Currently, they emigrate to giant orbiting cities owned and run by a single massive corporation. Humanity also flees to a fleet of solar clippers, which are vessels that are partway between clippers and ironclads.
Leagues of explorers fan out across the galaxy in search of new planets to relocate to. Merchants carry goods from city to city. Pirates prey on the merchants, and the Navy preys on the pirates.
In the cities, those unfortunate enough to be unable to take to shipboard life eke out a living in the dirty, overcrowded, poverty-stricken cities.
So, yeah. That ends my spiel. We have a few people working on the project right now, even though progress has slowed significantly lately. We have three stories written in the universe, and we're focusing on one planet with surrounding cities and ships right now to have enough world-building to write an anthology of stories for, so please, come join us if you're interested. There's room for social commentary, maritime-esque adventure stories, space opera type stories, conspiracy stories, and pretty much anything else as we get the setting more developed with other planets and non-human species.
