My wife had a checkup yesterday at Iowa City hospital. During an ultrasound, they found an enlarged lymph node in her neck. We go back tomorrow for a biopsy (they couldn't work us in for the biopsy yesterday).

Praying for your wife, that the enlargement is nothing serious. And for you, too, Frank -- it's never easy to stand by when a loved one has a major or minor health issue.

Praying for your wife and her doctors, Frank. May they get to the bottom of the issue quickly, and may it be as non-serious as possible!

Biopsy was done yesterday. They took several samples from the node and told us 3-4 business days.

Waiting is often the worst part. Praying peace for you guys in the meantime, and that the results are good.

Got the results today. The node tested negative for calcitonin (a cancer marker specific to a form of cancer removed from my wife years ago), but it was still abnormal. There were thyroid cells in node but her thyroid was removed 12 years ago. The doctor said we may want to remove the node anyway as that could be an indication that something is about to go wrong there. We're praying to see what we should do.

Prayers continuing, Frank.
Did the doctor indicate whether this was a needs-to-be-done-soon surgery or less pressing?

The doctor said if we didn't have the node removed, we would be doing ultrasounds every six months. She also said this made her "uncomfortable." After prayer, Sandy and I decided to have it removed. She will call the doctor today and start that scheduling.

Will be praying, then, that the surgery goes smoothly and successfully, and Sandy's recovery is uneventful.

We are now scheduled for July 29th. If someone has to reschedule, we will be moved to the 22nd.

Got an odd message yesterday that the doctor scheduled a cat scan before the operation in case there is more. We were not consulted. We were not told that this was going to happen. We just got an email that Sandy was scheduled for a cat scan next Monday. Sandy does not want another cat scan. Sandy's regular doctor wants to keep the number of scans she has low because of radiation.
If the surgeon insists, Sandy is thinking of canceling the surgery. She and I both want the lymph node removed, but I will stand with her if the doctor insists on a scan.
The surgery will require an ultrasound ON THAT DAY so that the doctor can go straight to the offending node without damaging more tissue than necessary. Cat scan was never mentioned.

A little late, but can you ask for a MRI instead? No radiation.

No one from the doctor's office has called her back. Sandy canceled the scan Friday. At this point, it's just the surgery and ultrasound on the 29th. I would be in favor of an MRI and mentioned it last week.
