Jonny is our youngest and has always been healthy. At his 4-year checkup, the doctor found a heart murmur. He told us that more than 90% of these turn out to be nothing, and the kids grow out of them. But he scheduled an appointment with a specialist to check things out. The appointment is next Thursday, but I wish it were today. The murmur disappeared and reappeared depending on Jonny's position.
The last few weeks Jonny has been acting more tired. We put him back on naps and that seems to help. But last week he woke up completely not himself one day. He lay around and just sat with us until he threw up. Then he was normal. Today, he slept in and then was acting like he did that day last week. He didn't throw up but came close. We had a big trip to the zoo on Monday and we stayed in a hotel the night before and his aunt and uncle started teaching the boys to swim, so I imagine he's partly just still tired from that.
We have been praying about his heart since the finding (heart murmurs are not considered a diagnosis, we found out. They are "findings" until more is determined). I'm starting to get concerned.

Praying for him, that the murmur would be nothing harmful and that God would grant you peace of mind as you wait for answers!

My wife just messaged me that Jonny is acting himself. He is making a concentrated effort to irritate his older brother. She noticed that both days he woke up like this, he hadn't drunk much the day before. We'll be watching his liquid intake and keeping that up.

I pray the docs are able to get to the bottom of this quickly for you. My 6 year old has SVT (a non-life threatening heart electrical issue that causes rapid heart rate) and takes meds for it right now. I can sympathize with how scary it is to think there might be something wrong with your child's heart. Thankfully, the meds have eliminated his episodes, and we may be able to wean him off them. Worst case scenario is he has elective surgery as an adult (cardiac ablation to eliminate the extra electrical pathway) and he won't have to worry about it anymore.
My middle son has a murmur that has never caused any side effects. Just a noisy thrumming through his mitral valve.
Anyway, the point I'm making here is that there's a very good chance that your little one's heart sounds are completely innocent. I hope that turns out to be the case, like it has for us.

Praying God wrap His loving arms around you and your family, enfolding you in His peace, and hold Jonny in His healing, protecting hands.

I know how scary this can be, Frank. My family and I will be praying.

Just got back from the appointment. The cardiologist was very thorough. We started with an X-ray and EKG. Then the medical history interview. Then he looked Jonny over and listened to his heart from all over his chest, neck, side.
Final analysis: Innocent heart murmur. Just a noise, not a leak or hole in the heart. Doesn't even need to see Jonny for a followup "unless you have further concerns."
Thanking Jesus (repeatedly).

Sorry for missing the update a week ago--but hooray that it's just a murmur.

So very glad to hear it's something innocent, something he can outgrow without problems.
