Sometimes the ideas come through pictures rather than words. This thread is devoted to interesting images and sites on the Internet which may help to stimulate ideas for you.

Here's an interesting artist who handles sci-fi themes. He is a scientist who works for a pharmaceutical company, but also an artist. His material appears with a lot of secular science fiction, and judging by some of the ways he handles his subject matter he is seems more secularist than Christian in outlook. Nevertheless, you may find his unusual way of viewing objects useful when you have a mental block in one of your writing projects. There is a similarity in his style to Salvador Dali. www.slawcio.com/myart.html

Let's not forget the links provided through Where the Map Ends. There are links to several artists found here with examples of their range of styles. www.wherethemapends.com/fantasticvisions/fantasticvisions.htmVisual artists can often set a tone that resonates with what a different sort of artist, the writer, is trying to convey. The medium may be different, but the message gets through. Looking at the right piece of art can encourage a writer's creativity. The human brain tends to operate with a dominant side--left side or right side. In some people this dominance switches back and forth, from left to right. The ability to fantasize occurs on the right side, whereas the ability to plot and plan occurs on the left. New creative connections can be made when different areas of the brain are accessed. Which side of your brain do you normally use? Here's an interesting experiment you can try out yourself. Thanks for the link to Fantastic Visions, Teskas. You beat me to it. One of the links on that page is to a place to really get lost in fantastical art is here: www.shannonassociates.com/style/style_scifi.cfm. This is the SF/Fantasy art section of the Shannon Associates' artists. Jeff

Thanks for the link, Jeff.
I'm finding the pictures a big help as I try to build a new protagonist. They suggest images--faces and physical features and the personality behind them--which I would not ordinary consider when working with words.
There is an artist on the link you suggested, Tristan Elwell, whose equestrian image is in a style that reminds me of Goya. Goya doing CSF--what a stunning thought!
And the Where the Map Ends link to Bruno Werneck was another fabulous link for me. After I saw his material, I decided to discard my original main character and go in search of a new one.

This little girl is simply amazing. I don't know if she quite falls into the "spec fic" category, but you must check out her work (be sure to click the "more art" link). www.artakiane.com/home.htm

I tried the right brain, left brain link. I don't know how significant it is, but at first I saw her going clockwise (right brain) then I thought I saw her turn counter clockwise (left brain); so I guess I'm just confused. I really could see her turn both directions.

So, you could see her turn in both directions? That explains in part why you are a published author, Robi. You are using both sides of your brain!!!!
The beauty of the human brains is that it can be taught. If any of you are only seeing the dancer move in one direction, and can't see her turn, keep practicing. Eventually, if you work at it, you will see the opposite motion. It means you have accessed a different hemisphere of your brain.

I found this artist on Deviant art. He has a great style for SF novel covers I think. Maybe you could use him Jeff. www.artofconway.com/

Daniel's stuff looks great, Kirk. I saw a robotic angel woman, but otherwise was unsure if the artist is a Christian. Any idea?

Dunno for sure Jeff. But if he isn't, hire him and then you'll have an opportunity to evangilize him!

Ooh, those are great, Rachel. Love "Deception," especially. And I think I know what story world they're from. Yes?
Thanks for posting those links, strangewind.
Hey, pixy, come bask in our appreciation of your work!

Aw, thanks guys! You're so sweet! Jeff: Those images are sort of from the same story world. They're from my newest WIP that's set in the future, GOLDEN. I've been calling it my post-apocalyptic faerie novel (with vampires too). It's tied to the other one you read (Willow Door), though, cause it has some character links. Here's a teaser incorporating the images: www.shadowofthewood.com/golden-teaser/And I added music to the chapter excerpts to show what music inspired the words a little, too. Music is hugely important to me. www.shadowofthewood.com/golden-excerpt/Drawing those character images was an awesome exercises. It really helped me get deeper into the character's heads and made them more real to me. I highly recommend trying it, even if you don't ever show anyone. Another good idea is to look for actors or models that match your vision of a character. I had mine (before I had the drawings) right next to me every time I wrote. It gets me thinking more like them somehow and helps me picture them more clearly. I know loads of awesome artisits on DA... Here's a few of my fave fantasy friends (try saying that ten times fast): elfin-grrl.deviantart.com/elvenstar83.deviantart.com/saimain.deviantart.com/nell-fallcard.deviantart.com/kartk.deviantart.com/ (This is a really good Christian artist friend of mine. Her work is very lovely) And here's my gallery if you hang there and want to be my friend. thepix.deviantart.com/

For the launch of Marcher Lord Press I'm putting together a book of speculative art by Christian artists. So if you know of any who might be interested, please send them my way.
