Contrary to Randy Ingermanson's apparent opinion that listening to music while writing is distracting (I just finished listening to the talks for his Fiction 101 course), I actually find that listening to music helps me focus.
I listen to a bit of everything, except hard rock, metal, rap, and hip-hop. What I'm listening to depends on what I've decided to put on my iPod at any given time. At present, for example, my iPod has anime music, video game music, and Hilary Duff on it.
I can't really say what I consistently listen to while writing though, because lately most of my writing work (well, pre-writing work really, since I haven't started the first draft) has been done at home, where my mom doesn't like me to have my iPod on if I'm alone, because she wants me to be able to hear what's going on.

My current WIP got me listening to new artists I'd never listened to before. My favorites are Plumb, Fireflight, and Skillet. Before that I listened to your average soccer mom variety of Christian music.

My favorites are Plumb, Fireflight, and Skillet. All good stuff. Barlow Girl is good as well, if you like Plumb. I just got back from Creation Fest Northwest not too long ago and saw Skillet, Relient K, David Crowder Band, Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, Barlow Girl, Kutless, Family Force 5, Hawk Nelson, Stellar Kart, Red, needtobreathe, Israel Houghton, Pillar, Remedy Drive, Barlow Girl, Above the Golden State, The Classic Crime, Group 1 Crew, 116 Clique, Lacrae, Sanctus Real, and Disciple in concert. I have 1152 full albums according to my iTunes, ranging from Christian rock, rap, and pop to secular bands. There's a lot of jazz and techno in there too. Ultimately, I listen to what fits my mood at the time. If been playing the crap out of FM Static's "Dear Diary" album that I bought recently. You have to listen to that one in order though as all the songs tell the story of a soul searching teenager, starting with his moving to a new town, not fitting in anywhere, meeting an amazing Christian girl, his progressive growth and struggle as a new Christian, dealing with the change of the aforementioned girl when her dad commits suicide, his decision to follow God, and eventually his leaving for college. Reading the blog posts online or the copy shown in the CD jacket fills the gaps between songs.

Oh, I do like Barlow Girl, just don't own any of their songs. I'm still old school with the CD's. I'll move on to some used iPod or the like just as people are having the new ones implanted. I'm slow with technology. I listen to some secular but not as much now that I have kids. I'm really into Evanescence right now and Band of Skulls.
