I can't speak to the subgenre, but it sounds like Shannara. For years, it was a fantasy series, until Brooks tied it in with his Knight of the Word series. Then it just confirms what the hints have been saying for a while in his books: the world in Shannara is the remains of a post-Apocalyptic event that led to massive destruction and people abandoning modern luxuries for a simpler life.
Deathgate Cycle did it, Shannara did it and Pern did it. Pern had little metal because of what it was, though... Planet Earthlike, Resources Negligable. The name of the world came from its tag on the report for whether it was worth colonizing. There was a book of vignettes or novellas (not sure of the lengths, so the appropriate term is up in the air until someone corrects me) where they tell that story and how they left the Southern Colony and about the last person to escape the world before all of the world was driven to an agrarian existence.

Pulling down the family Wikipedia, I find "Parallel Earth, Resources Negligible." The first two books chronologically are the short story anthology The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall and the novel Dragonsdawn.
Which is neither here nor there. They're just an interesting combination of fantasy (dragons, lords and ladies, swords) and scifi.
