The idea looked workable on parchment fungus. Deep shafts out of which a geothermally-powered laser would fire. True, it could not be aimed, and there would be dead zones around the laser and the feedback energy dispersal shafts, but the Powers that Be insisted on continuing. That is, until it was calculated that the full-size laser would produce heat beyond what any known solid material could take, and so would melt both the laser guide and the feedback dispersal system. The shafts already dug were not fitted, but saw peacetime use, much like the missile silos on the Human homeworld after dangerous glitches came to light.
Just a backstory idea I had, although I might show a monastic order in one of these shafts.

I wonder what would happen if such a device were turned on? Would the world melt? Would some far-future space-exploring race find the shaft of light that used to be Earth? Hmm...
I wonder if special crystals could be used to contain the energy? Make a portable, handle-type thingie. Wait a second. This could quickly become the origin story for lightsabres! Cool!
Great idea, korora!

like this backstory. Implied is something fearsome and terrible threating the earth, for which they felt the weapon needed to be built. What might that thing be? Does it return to Earth?
