An interesting article. I also clicked on the related articles they had below that one. Fascinating stuff about what scientists are finding out about our galaxy in this great vast universe.
I'm surprised this thread hasn't sparked any discussion yet. For example: Could it be possible that God even created planets with emotions just as he did humans and animals, but they are so big and function so differently that we just don't notice? If so, then wouldn't it be just like God to display to us a depressed planet that's suicidal just to let us know that He loves us that also get depressed?
There are other thoughts I have beside just that one, but that one seems the most correct as "creation declares the glory of God" (paraphrase).
What do you think?

I hadn't considered the idea of a sentient and emotional planet. I like the idea, though! It brings to mind Tolkien's Ents. I wonder how we'd rescue a suicidal planet. Maybe it just wants to have a people of its own to nourish and support? Like a nanny with no kids to watch. Interesting...

Fascinating. I hadn't even bothered to think yet why it would be depressed, just that God was showing us His glory through it. For sure though, this is great fodder for a speculative novel if thought out properly.
And really, even if we could figure a way to help the planet survive, another question is, should we? How would you reason with such a creature? And how would you survive the terrible heat of its star?
I like the comparison to the Ents. How about Ego in Marvel Comics? He was a sentient planet. He even had a face. He was usually protrayed as a "bad guy", but what if it was just a matter of having an understanding of what his needs were? What if he had become that suicidal planet?
Now you've got me thinking. Hmmmmmm.........

Could it be possible that God even created planets with emotions just as he did humans and animals, but they are so big and function so differently that we just don't notice? /quote] It's entirely possible... Paul does mention that "creation groans" which implies something more than inanimate matter. And doesn't the book of Job mention something about the "morning stars sang together" (or am I getting my OT books mixed up and it's Psalms?) Anyway, from creation's standpoint it's been an awfully long time they've been waiting for a resolution to this whole sin issue. Maybe this little planet has given up? Or maybe planets can be deceived just like people. BTW, I"m glad dizzy rescued this thread....I never saw it before.. I guess it got pushed down the list and off the first page of threads before anyone really had a chance to see it.

I thought of Ego too, but I didn't know enough about him to honestly use him as a comparison.
And on tris' post, I remembered the Bible tells us that if we don't praise God, the very rocks we walk on will. There is much more going on with creation than we know. There have even been studies done with house plants and music (especially according to Audio Adrenaline) or conversation. Makes one wonder.
