Was just going through the Genre Homeworld for new posts. I thought I was on "When Genres Collide" when I was actually on "Modern Magic" and the Faeries thread caught my eye. That's how this idea came to be:
Tinkerbell with a tiny, but powerful M-16 or AK-47. I don't have anything beyond that. Anyone else think this could be fun? Weird? Too far off the map?

That could be really cool! Especially if you used a ruined world idea and the faires are a gangster group. You would have to have a very different antagonist to pull this off and you would have to really create a feel different from the happy bubbly tinkerbell. MAybe a hardened set of faries living a polluted and poisoned world. And maybe new creatures besides insects and flowers!

Oooh, I'd read it. Sounds very intriguing. In addition to what Ryain said...I'd put different clothes on 'em too. Something more original than pointy mini-dresses.

Anyone remember Indian in the Cupboard or whatever that book was? Kid puts toys in the cupboard and they come to life? I LOVED that book lol, little itty bitty soldiers coming to life with their tiny guns.
Theory! Just popped into my head, would a race of itty bitty toys come to life and all that, knowing war only, for some unknown reason. Imagine a "big person" coming in to each side, one from God, the other from...well not God, they could change the course of an entire race of people.
As for too off the map, I don't think around here you can find the end of the map

It would sell on title alone.
It's a subgenre that is due for a lampooning, imo, just as I've tried to do with Amish fiction.

This sounds awesome! I'd love to see it. Imagine that the fairies are all hardened soldier like gang members and are evil and the orcs are the light bearers of Christ. One problem: Orcs are so highly allergic to gun powder that when they are shot they explode! Think of the dillemmas for the orcs to witness to the rest of the "fantasy" world set in this "modern" twist if they have to be fearful that at any time a fairy could just show up and kill them as martyrs to Christ. Now, what happens when a fairy runs out of ammo and actually hears the Word of the Lord for the first time and comes to know salvation? What kind of change would take place within and without that fairy? Would this fairy then become the more "sparkling" fairy we normally would know? And would that fairy be successful in defending its newfound "brethren" in the orcs? I think that particular fairy would have to be the central character in the whole story. It sure would make for an interesting twist on things, that's for sure.

Amish Fiction? I know just the poster child -- Weird Al Yankovich with his song/video "Amish Paradise." :-)

This idea has sparked creation and now I am subject to a story idea. In a ruined and poisoned world there are Faeries and Feys amoung other creatures. Neither are good and neither are bad. All are lost souls. The only colourful thing any of these beings have are their wings. The main character is a girl Faerie whose wings have been torn out. It's a story about finding love and the streangth to forgive.
