I suppose that the monasteries and convents would, once again, be the places where people pick up the pieces of civilization.
How long would it take for another Renaissance to gain momentum?

A few hundred years? I don't know, how long did England take to pull out of the Dark Ages? (My history classes have fallen out of my memory ...)
Also, do we still have monasteries and convents? And do they still preserve books and culture the way the ancient ones did? I'd think that it'd be more like in Alas, Babylon, where all the bits of civilization are in the libraries. And once electricity is gone, the kids have no more TV, so they go to the library instead.
Assuming they weren't all zombified. :-)
