Ths is unedited so please be understanding. I want to know if I am describing too much, too little, ect.
Prologue 12:32 A.M. 3 / 20 / 3456
Devion stood rigid as he looked at the falling fireball, what was it? Reaching for his radio he pressed the talk button. Static greeted him like a harsh growl. He was standing on the deck of Courageous, Alex was in the sleeping quarters getting some shut eye.
Devion pressed the button again and was again rewarded with static. Devion backed up for a second, the fireball was coming and was too hard to see clearly what it was, but it was going to hit them!
Devion tried to run on the place, the rope seemingly trying to wrap around his legs as he walked. The controlled atmosphere in his suit, a 77.9 degree set, seemed to lose its heat, the glass screen fogged up as he breathed the carbon dioxide out and into the below zero degree climate that was space.
The comet was now framed with the background of Zacilli and its rings, the fire tail of it was cast in a green glow.
Finally, the door was in its grasp. He pulled open the large vacuum like door, the gravity inside of the ship sucked him into the airtight room. The door automatically closed and Devion grasped the handle of the door that led to the interior of the ship.
The door folded open at an aggravatingly slow pace, looking back at the comet he estimated that he would hit the ship in five minutes, it took three minutes to evacuate the ship of its ten crew members. Plenty of time thought Devion to himself over and over.
He stopped in his tracks, something had come to his mind, something unexpected. Do I know that the comet will hit the ship? Devion looked around, thinking that the thought had come from someone else, how could he have thought that? Looking back out of the several feet thick windows, it was definitely going to hit the ship.
Four minutes.
Devion ran down the hallway, the catwalk’s metal mesh clanking as each boot came down hard. The red button, the one that triggered the alarm, where was it. Everything seemed beyond reach of his memory, again, that voice came again, seemingly taking over his mind. In the control room. That made sense. Devion stopped worrying where the thoughts were coming from, he just wanted them to be right.
Three minutes.
The control room loomed into sight thirty feet away, two men were asleep in swivel chairs. Devion shook their shoulders. “An asteroid is headed right for us, we need to get evacuated!” the two’s reaction to the situation was immediate. One of them punched in some numbers on the computer screen, the other used a key to unlock a vault. Devion ran up to the wall and pressed the three inch in diameter button.
A sharp chirp of a bell and flashing lights alerted the sleeping crew.
The pods, get them ready. The voice came again. Wait, Devion thought. that is not my voice.
The click of the clock on the ship wall brought him back to the reality, no time to wonder.
Two minutes.
The alarm bells were going off all over his brain, something was not right. He ran down the catwalk, slipping and falling, he got up in a frantic daze, nothing was going to stop him from doing what he had to do to survive.
He didn’t think that he would get there fast enough, he didn’t think that the crew could get to it, he ran as fast as his clumsy body inside of the space suit could offer, not very much. The door to the ship deck was in sight! Devion was relieved to see the nine other crew members already there.
“Get in the pods, I will set you off!” cried Devion, pointing at the first few pods.
“What’s happening?” one of the members asked.
“No time to explain, just get going!”
One minute.
The crew filled three of the twenty pods, diving into the two foot round holes, barely large enough for several of the crew. Devion ran to the launch pad, pulling three levers, the ones that launched the pods. Devion watched their tail ends light up and heat ripple through the rotors.
Devion braced himself as the door to the outside opened. The ships were automatically sucked out into the nighttime space, they were programmed to head back to earth, none of the crew had seen the planet for over ten years.
The doors closed. Devion tried to get into one, before the impact.
Thirty seconds.
Devion panicked as his foot caught on the ledge, but panicking, he just got it stuck worse. Breath, be calm, you will be fine. The voice came again, its odd sound rang through Devion’s head, defying every single thing that he could imagine. Nothing made sense anymore, Devion knew that this wasn’t his voice.
The thing hit.
The ship rocked and turned, casting Devion back and onto the catwalk. Devion could hear creeks and groans from the ship, not a good sign. Finally everything stopped. Was Devion alive. He looked around, he saw only darkness. Dust particles filled the air and it was so cold. Devion coughed, he was so tired. Get up, the voice commanded. Devion stirred, but other than that nothing. Get up! The voice was stricter now.
Devion slowly rolled over, the aching of broken ribs flared up his arms and out of his fingers. Devion slowly rolled to his knees. It was all a storm of dust, there was nothing there but dust, nothing-wait! There was something, a silhouette in the dust!
It was low, about two feet off the ground, it seemed to be searching, Where are you? Wow, that was the voice, Devion stood there, in fear and wonder, it was paralyzing. Devion inched his finger forward, the searching life-form stopped, looked straight at Devion.
Get up, run, get out of there! This time it was the voice of Devion, it was his instinct. But he couldn’t, no, he just couldn’t.
There you are, the voice said. Devion looked on in horror as the thing came out of the smoke and dust screen. He looked like tiger, dark blue stripes covered a green body. His tail flicked over, Devion gulped. On his tail there seemed to be a gun of some sort. A glowing orb of red just pointing in a beam of light.
There you are. . .we have much to say together.
Devion looked forward, he was hyperventilating. “What do you want?”
The creature seemed to wince, as if it hurt him to hear a human’s voice. Please, think, don’t talk, my brain sensors are too fragile to take that sort of thing.
Devion slowly got into the position of a crabwalk and slowly backed up until he hit the wall of the ship. What do you want? Devion repeated.
The catlike beast flashed an odd look at Devion. You don’t know?
Devion was sweating, the thing was two feet away from him, he tried to back away but he could anymore, he found himself trying to climb the sloped wall.
Don’t do that! The cat backed away and paced. There was a fire in its eye that was not there before. Whenever I try to talk. . .whenever I try to make conversation, this always happens. Devion now recognized what was in the cat’s eyes: rage. They always panic, they never listen, they always try to kill us. All those humans. . .I am not like them. . .he was rambling now, pacing and looking at everything like it was an enemy.
Devion looked up, what he saw almost made him pass out in fear. There was a small crack in the ceiling, leading to the outer chamber which kept out the pressure. If the second layer had cracked then they had only a matter of minutes left. Devion cursed, for a second time that day he would be in a minutes-away-from-death situation.
Where did you come from? Devion asked, trying to break the ramblings and get an answer.
The cat looked at him, his eyes were bloodshot, giving him an evil appearance.
I come from Mauradux, I rode here on a pod and landed on your ship.
Mauradux! We searched that planet, there was no life there, we were sure of it! Exclaimed Devion.
There is, we hide ourselves from the pale skinned. You are legend you know. Nobody other then me and the Watchers believe in you, but the others will see. . .his voice rolled off and his eyes had a look of pride now.
Devion was curious, but he had to get off of the ship. We have to go, this ship is going to crush in on itself and we don’t want to be in the way of it when it does. Thought Devion toward the creature.
Don’t worry, my ship is no farther than a few seconds from where we are now. Reassured the creature. There will be time to talk during the flight back to my planet. Said the creature. My name is Dune. Dune introduced himself.
Devion went rigid. Me, go to your planet, why?
The Watchers- He was cut off by the sound of leaking gas filled the air. Devion gulped, the outer core had been breached. Devion stood up immediately, they had to get out of there that minute. Come on, we need to go, now!
I ran to the cat, he started to walk.
Run, are you serious, we could die of we stay here! Dune quickened his pace.
Devion ran to the deck. Where did you land it?
On the tail end! Dune shouted above the growing noise.
Do you have a gravity displacer? Or a suit? Asked Devion.
I don’t need one, my body is meant for space!
Devion ran along with Dune to the stairway. Going on the first step, he felt a large explosion go off in the boiler room. Faster, the ship is starting to crush in on itself!
Devion skipped the next three steps, hopping up into the above platform that led to the outer layer of the ship. Devion pulled with all his mind at the door’s handle, finally, hearing a sound of air escaping, everything was filled with silence. Nothing. Devion thought to Dune. Come on, we have to get going, we don’t have much more time!
The cat hopped up next to Devion. Grab on to my fir, I won’t drift!
Devion grabbed on for dear life as Dune dashed along the top of the ship, his paws making no sound as they hit the metallic outer layer. Devion looked behind him, he wished he hadn’t. The 12 fuel capsules that projected from the ship made the Courageous look like a squid. But the fuel capsules were folding in on themselves. It looked like a movie special effect. Devion was awed and terrified by the sight.
We are here! Dune yelled in his mind, pulling up along an odd looking object. It looked like a metal box with round edges. But there was no time to dwell on it, more of the ship was folding, coming closer and closer to them.
Dune threw open the door to the ship and thrust Devion inside. There were two seats, on above the other. Devion chose the one without controls. Hopping into the bottom one, Devion watched as Dune rammed the door closed as he got into the seat with the controls. Is the air breathable in here? Asked Devion.
In a second it will be.
Devion slowly felt himself rising. Devion released a gasp of relief, but there weren’t out of trouble yet. Devion heard a sound the sounded like someone wheezing.
Okay, you can breath now. Said Dune.
Devion unscrewed his space helmet, taking a deep breath of filtered oxygen. How long will it take to get to your planet?
We won’t be going there directly, we will go to the main ship first, from there it will take a few days.
Devion didn’t say anything for the next hour, his thoughts were wondering all over the place, why had this happened to him, were the others alright? Why was Dune taking him back to his own planet, what was Dune anyway.
Eventually, Devion drifted off into a fitful sleep, tossing and turning all the while. His eyelids fluttered indicating a nightmare.
***
5:27 P.M.
Devion’s eyelids fluttered open, where was he? Nothing looked the same. What looked like concrete was everywhere. Hello? The voice drifted into his consciousness.
Devion rubbed his eyes, they were met by a sight that at first made him afraid. Dune was standing a few feet away from him. Then it all came back to Devion, Courageous’ destruction, everything.
Hello? Dune’s thought/voice repeated.
Devion groaned. Where am I?
You are in the main vessel, you have been here for several hours, our doctors have been working on you for a long time.
Devion tried to lift his head but a throbbing pain filled his brain.
You had been hurt when I landed on your ship. . .sorry about that. You had blood seeping through your brain, you had to have cuttery.
Cuttery? Asked Devion in curiosity.
Your kind call it surgery. Dune had a little trouble pronouncing the word.
Oh, Devion thought in understanding.
Just then a knock came to the door. Devion walked over to it on all fours and opened it.
Another cat, bigger and with more muscle than Dune, came through the small door.
You two have been summoned by the great council. It said.
This is Lucifer.
Devion gave a chill, that name, it meant something to him. He thought back to his childhood years, back when he went to church. That had been the name of Satan before the fall. Devion was going to be careful around Lucifer, if his name had anything to do with his character.
Devion just stared coldly at him.
Dune shook his head and proceeded to open the door for Lucifer and Devion. Lucifer stood there, eyeing Devion just the way that Devion had him. Devion walked out of the door, never keeping his eyes off of Lucifer. Lucifer stood there, apparently not going to go with them.
Dune gave up trying to hold the door open for him and shut it.
Devion walked down the hall.
I thought that you hadn’t found life yet. Said Dune.
What do you mean? Asked Devion.
You know Lucifer, am I correct?
No, you mean how we looked at each other? Said Devion.
Exactly what I mean, I know that Lucifer isn’t that nice or anything, sometimes he can be outright mean, but he isn’t all bad. Dune tried to justify Lucifer’s actions.
His name means something in our culture, it means devil. Explained Devion.
It pretty much means the same here. His mother was a pagan, she tried to kill the Watchers, she would have killed me if it weren’t for Lucifer. His mother named him that hoping that he would choose to follow in her footsteps.
Devion shivered in disgust. They came to the end of the hall and to a archway that led into a great hall. For a moment Devion was still amazed that they were still on a spacecraft, going hundreds of thousands of miles per hour. Pillars of the concrete like substance lined every inch of the place except for where they were, forming a corridor. At the end of the makeshift hall, there were seven chairs rising several feet off of the floor.
On top of each chair there were other aliens, all looking almost identical to one another.
You have been called, began the alien to the right. because of this. . .pale skin. Who is he and what is he, it would be best to answer quickly.
Dune shuffled his feet a little bit. Us, the Watchers, believe that he is. . .in the genealogy of him.
The council shifted in there seats. What makes you think that?
He has the mark. gasps went around the room like a wave as Dune said the words.
They settled themselves. Show us.
Dune walked up to Devion. Go along with me on this one and please don’t make any wrong moves. muttered Dune in Devion’s ear.
Dune placed his paws on Devion’s shoulder pads, the suit. Slowly pulling down the suit, he pulled it to his knees. There you see?
Gasps came from the council as they stared at Devion. Devion looked down in embarrassment at his uncovered body. Mutters went along the row of chairs that was the council. It is true, He is the one, The prophecy, how could it be?
They were all staring at the same thing, his tattoo on his hip. It was a picture of a gothic cross, the kind that you found on old tapestries and coats of arms.
Devion nudged Dune. Can I. . . he trailed off and pointed toward his clothes that were lying on the ground.
Oh, of course.
What is your verdict? Dune shouted in a forceful tone over the council. They stared at Dune in an unappreciative manner but otherwise didn’t say anything.
The seven people whispered among themselves, their small talk didn’t have enough impact to come toward the two people.
The loud groan of the door echoed throughout the chamber. Turning to look, Devion and Dune came face to face with. . .Lucifer. He was holding a long poll. Following the tall line that it created, Devion saw a three foot long blade on the end. Devion gulped.
A pit started to form as he walked toward the council, I could see Dune’s muscles tensing. Perhaps there were some issues between them. He whispered something into the nearest councilor’s ear. His face darkened for a second, then softened into understanding. Rising, he pointed toward Dune. You may execute.
Lucifer started to charge Dune. He was frozen in shock and fear, as was Devion. He watched in helplessness as the blade went through the tough outer layer of fur and into the skin. Blood gushed forth from the wound. I can’t move, I try, but my legs won’t obey, what is happening, why is this happening? The thoughts went through Devion’s mind at the same moment, confusing him.
And you, you pale skinned piece of trash, the councilor thought toward him. You will be. . .
