Take the "change one thing from the past" mechanism of the alternative history genre and then run it past our own time. Example: Operation Desert Shield didn't happen and therefore, 100 years from now, Iraq establishes the first manned colony on Jupiter's largest moon.
What about the future of mobile communications without having the benefit of a transistor being invented in the 20th century?
What would Japan be like in 30 years if we'd never dropped atomic bombs?
That's just off the top of my head. (Has this already been done?) What can you think of?

I've read or heard of stories like this, like ones in which the Roman Empire never fell or Germany won WWII.
It's still a terrific idea and you should run with it!
