Maybe you can help me find out how much a table/booth costs and if it's too late to get one, then. I've been trying to contact them all year [grin] but they're not responding to e-mails. Now I think it's too late to get books in, even if it's not too late to get a table.
How much to just get in the door?

Hi Jeff, They may not be responding because they don’t know you. Sounds silly but I discovered you have to ‘network’ into the area’s fandom and become an accepted member before opportunities start opening up for you. It took me several years to become an accepted part of the art show staff. But then, most of us work MileHiCon, OPUS, and CoSine. The panels, staff, & other supplies are shared by all three shows. (No OPUS this year. Money issues.) To get in the door it’s $40 for the weekend. There are also one day rates but they aren’t posted on the site. Looks like most of the panel participants are local writers. I know most of the names if not the person including Hugo and Nebula winner Connie Willis. Since you’re attending for the first time Jeff, I suggest tracking me down and allowing me to introduce you around. It will give you some credibility. Since registration is normally set up where the art show is, I shouldn’t be too hard to find. Or, if I’m not there, Karen, art show director, or my husband David Luperti will probably know where I’m at. I do suggest making up some flyers and leaving it on the table that all cons provide for such info. Interested parties will pick them up. I am STRONGLY suggesting you attend MileHiCon next October. www.milehicon.org/ . It’s larger. You might not get a table since MHC and possibly CoSine as well, sell out their dealer tables by the end of the convention. Another reason you might not have gotten a response. However, if you go to MHC I can introduce you to Nina and her husband who run Who Else books in Denver. They are friendly to local writers and publishers. Are you thinking of going to World Con in Reno in 2011?

Credibility in the SF community isn’t as funny as it sounds. We have a lot of folks coming into the genre who haven’t been, how shall I say this, properly schooled . There are a number of ‘unwritten’ rules and it takes someone already there to help a newcomer.
Particularly for Christians – there are a growing number of us inside fandom, but that hasn’t always been the case. You have to use the tactics of Paul, the apostle, to get inside. Let them get to know you first BEFORE you allow your faith to be known. If they can see you aren’t the ‘hell and damnation’ crowd and aren’t going to condemn them for their beliefs, there are many pagans, witches, wiccans, and others, they are more apt to listen to you when God opens the door the witness.
It is very much about walking in wisdom, seeing the door, walking through and then shutting up when you’re supposed to. Most of these folks have been hurt by the ultra conservative religious bigots. It takes a lot of love and listening to reach their hearts.
AND you don’t look for immediate results. I’ve learned to take the long view. I may not see a difference in their lives tomorrow or next year or in ten years. But God could use my witness in their lives twenty or thirty years from now.
For instance, one very outspoken atheist is now apologizing to all her Christian friends for her attitude toward them. None of us are the extremists she knew growing up. That’s a HUGE barrier that got taken down. I’m not sure what God is going to do now, but all I can do wait for the right time and place, and it may not even be me who the door opens for.
So yes, introducing Jeff around is very important. The Co Sine group doesn’t know him and there will be only two maybe three Christians at that Con. MHC has eight or nine that I know of, half of which are either artists or on the art show staff, including Michael Carroll. He’s a nationally known artist who does space paintings for NASA.
I run a SF group Denverfilk and that is practically unheard off for a Christian to do in SF circles. It was purely a God thing because I hadn’t gone out after a leadership position. Many in fandom do. Anyway, everyone in the group knows my faith and you really have no idea what a witness that is because most Christians run very far away from Science Fiction and those who read it. I don’t even mention it at church because I get ‘funny’ looks.
Bottom line, it is my desire to help Jeff smoothly transition into local fandom since they don’t know who he is or what he publishes. It’s going to take time. In the meanwhile, I can introduce him to Nina and several of the attending editors/writers I know.

Thanks, Dragon.
When you said tables are sold out by the end of the con, did you mean that 2010 tables were sold out before the end of 2009's con?
I'm still interested (maybe) in having a table there this year. Possible?
Jeff

Truthfully Jeff, unknown. Hubby & I are art show staff but not on the ConCom. If you decide to come ask at the registration desk if there are any tables left or if they have room for one more. Registration, dealers area and art show are all in the same place. It’s a very small con.

Hubby just found out last night that there are 13 dealers at the show. That's the most they've ever had. Maybe that's why you never heard back from them, Jeff.
Per Karen, the art show director.

Am now at CoSine. Art show & dealer's room all set up. Registration table is in the atrium this year. Have been to one panel. "Going Both Ways: Authors who write in Multiple genres." It was great fun with Connie Willis, Lee Modesitt, Cynthia Felice, Rebecca Lickiss, Sarah Hoyt, and Christopher Salas. Authors really are not liking the practice of 'branding' that publishers are currently practicing nor the other marketing tactics practiced by the larger houses.
I have talked with Nina at 'Who Else' books. Said 'hello' to David Boop, one of our local Denver writers and Alan Lickiss. Artists currently having fun just hanging out together and discussing whatever topic comes up.
Lots going on tomorrow. If your local, drop by!
