Hey, I posted this on the Speculative sub genre board, but haven't gotten a reply, not even a 'you're nuts,' answer. Which makes me suspect I not communicating well. My fantasy 'The Farthest Gate' involves gating between earth and an alternate dimension, that includes time travel. Besides being a spectacular night show and ongoing scientific research, I'd like to use the Aurora Borealis as the power source. so is this just plain crazy? Any wisdom or advice? Thanks so much!

Just let us know when you get it written. Some of us like time travel....and using the Aurora Borealis to fuel it makes it even better.

Did anyone see "Frequency" starring Dennis Quade? The aurora borealis sent radio signals, through time, between him and his son.

Thanks Grace! I'm not left-brained but want a believable premise. Sounds awesome! Go for it!

Believe you me when The Farthest Gate is done, this group will be the first to know! Thanks for the lift! Just let us know when you get it written. Some of us like time travel....and using the Aurora Borealis to fuel it makes it even better.

Wow! I love "Frequency." It inspired for my time-travel premise for Farthest Gate. And what's not to love about Dennis Quade? Did anyone see "Frequency" starring Dennis Quade? The aurora borealis sent radio signals, through time, between him and his son.

Frequency...oh yeah. Watched it, bought it, re-watch it regularly. It's one of those satisfying, feel good movies you never get tired of.

I love the northern lights, being originally from Minnesota. They are beautiful. Have you read the Golden Compass? For some reason what you were talking about clicked with the book's ending. Unfortunately, I don't have the book anymore, but if I recall correctly, Lyra's father connects different dimensions/worlds by separating a person from their "spirit/daeman" and that created a force strong enough to create a bridge between the two worlds which reminded me a lot of the northern lights. Anyways, your book sounds good, looking to hear more about it.

That's what I was thinking of too - that book specifically involves alternate dimensions and the Aurora Borealis. What you said is basically what occurs at the end of the book.
The daemon concept in that book and its two sequels is interesting too. We never think of our soul manifesting itself in a physical animal form that we can see and converse with. One's daemon also supposedly reflects one's personality -- like servants always have dog daemons because like dogs they're submissive and loyal. I wonder what my daemon would be.

Have you seen the video of the Aurora that makes it appear that it is pouring forth from a large hole in the earth? Came to mind when you mentioned gates. Anyway, natural electric phenomena as power source? Why not? You could probably harness all sorts of currents that at the moment are either felt and unseen or seen and unused.

From a scientific standpoint, any conductor that passed through the aurora would generate and electric current, and due to the massive size and charge of the aurora, it would be a large current indeed. now how you got a conductor that far up or managed to bring the aurora down low enough is up to your imagination

Ya know, this discussion and the scientific links referenced makes me think about the metaphysics of being.
(er. . . sorry can't help it, 5 years studying philosophy warps your mind that way.)
It sounds like there is large scale magnetic coupling going on in the solarsystem, like all the planets are coupled to the sun in a complex field arangement that links them all.
What if that field is sentient?
What if it is the mind of the star?
What if all the planets are mere emanations of the magneto-energy of the sun?
What if the sun really is the Angel ruler of our solar system?
I mean there's a lot there below the surface. And more interesting there's a lot that we don't understand about how the heavenly bodies are coupled together.
It seems to me that the Aurora is merely the fringe of this mega coupling of the Earth into this transplanetary solar network. Or rather the Aurora is the fringe that is being trailed through the Earths atmosphere.
(As in, "She said withing herself I shall be healed if I so much as touch the fringe of his garment." 0r "I saw the Lord high and lifted up, and his train (the fringe of his garment) filled the temple. . . ")
You should be able to pull enough energy out of it to light up everybody's lives (in more ways than one) without even denting it. Although why Time Travel would be your chosen use I cannot imagine.
This gives me some new ideas for my mind twisting story "The Eleysium Wars". I'm posting the chapters as I write them over in the Anomalous Sandbox (see link below). Anyone who would care to join and join in the critiquing is more than welcome.
