Rep. Kosmas has sponsored a new bill to extend Shuttle Operations through 2011 and possibly renew funding for the Constellation program. I haven't read the whole Augustine Commission report yet -- the "summary" alone makes my head spin. So I still don't understand the administration's reason for axing the Constellation program after the Ares 1-X had a magnificent test flight. (The launch director called it "freakin' awesome.") All I know is thousands of people here -- and more in other states with NASA centers -- are going to lose their jobs between October and December. No word yet on whether my other half will be one of those. For a couple of years now, people have asked whether he'd loose his job when the shuttle program ends, and I'd say "no, he's fine -- he's already assigned to the Constellation program." So much for being "fine." I don't want to ask you to pray for a specific outcome for this bill. But as you pray that God will guide our national leaders, please put in an extra word for the space program. And please pray for provision for all these workers. They are brilliant, talented people, and I just pray that they will have jobs -- here or elsewhere, doing what they do now or doing something new -- that allow them to use their gifts and skills to their fullest potential. You can find out about the bill here: www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-4804

Update: The latest round of layoff notices went out this week, and my other half was spared. So it seems he will have a job until December, and maybe February. The launch of STS-134 is delayed until then, and a Senate committee recommended funding for another launch next summer. Still, it's all just delaying the inevitable. My dear Mr. is now trying to decide whether to stick around to the bitter end, or start looking for a new job now. He's inclined to stay, because he loves his job. But waiting may make it harder to find a job once the market is flooded with engineers. <sigh> God is in control, I know. I just wish He'd e-mail me the agenda.
