I was thinking about universal translators and suchlike while watching...what else?...Star Trek. Anyhoo, I got to thinking, a race of telepaths (I know it's Trekkie-ish, but hear me out). This race is composed of catlike creatures who hail from a distant planet that was destroyed, searching for a new home. They walk on two legs and wear clothing. They communicate entirely by telepathy. On their heads, they wear translator bands that describe (in English or whatever) the images they're trying to communicate to any non-telepaths. It also relays images based on the words it picks up from non-telepaths to the telepathic cat creatures (whom I've decided to call Frelians). None of them can talk. They all communicate via images. (i.e. Frelian turns to human and their translator band kicks in saying, "Planet, blue ad pink atmosphere, come from...large, winged vessels send plasma shots through atmosphere...oxygen-nitrogen combination eradicated...Frelians board escape vessels...Few escape...Search through stars for new oxygen based planet." etc. etc. etc.) The creatures' fur is pro'ly natural colors (tan, brown, black, and white colors). They have large round eyes that are entirely blue with a narrow strip of brown in the center. The all have tails. I know this is the time to be narrowing stuff down...but the idea just hit me...I thought it might work in the Universal translator idea thing in...but, we don't have to use this if we don't want to. Just a thought.

Great idea, Ellij.
I like that the SF people would have some odd, different-species "specialists" they'd have to work with. Like, "Okay, we can't understand these guys. Bring out the Tiggers."
