Friendly advice: As I understand it, posting your work where it can be searched for and found by the public could cause you copyright issues later. If you're needing critique or feedback on actual writing samples, you might want to consider joining the Sandbox group Newburydave has going. It's not search-able by non-members, so you don't have to fret over copyright stuff.

For what it's worth Choosy, if you're still watching this thread, I think you balanced Scene Setting (telling) and showing (dialog and action) quite well in the opening scene.
Did you put this one up over on the Sandbox and I missed it?

And I deleted it. I think I'll get a Sandbox account if it's not too hard. Not on there yet, as of this particular moment of typing. But soon.
And for those who don't understand why we have just been talking about a nonentity, it's because I deleted the first post.

But why are there lots of other threads on here about original works? Hmm. Selah-ing on that one. If you could tell me what the difference is, I'd thank you.

Hey, choosybeggar!
A lot of the older posts were there before the whole issue of what consitutes being published came up. Some of us deleted our old posts (or requested they be deleted) if we were seriously considering submitting the work to any publisher (whether in print or on-line).
I think many of the newer posts (after Dec 2009) are here perhaps because the top thread (Read This Before You Post Your Story) was overlooked. Perhaps they are from folks who aren't wanting to submit anything to a publisher so they don't mind that their writing is considered already published if it's posted here. Or maybe they just want feedback on a bit of writing they'll never use in anything they submit.
Your guess is as good as mine regarding the recent ones.
Anyway, as birdnerd said, the Sandbox group is a non-searchable place for feedback that won't jeopardize the publication status of writing you intend to submit.

Okay, I tried to get on the Sandbox, and failed because of the complications of getting a Yahoo account for it. I'll try again.
Oh, and thanks, newburydave! I like to hear that my semi-sorta mixedly first draft was good enough to get only positive generalities. Well, it wasn't the first draft. I write all of my stuff longhand (right?) on paper before transferring it to the computer.
