Saw this today on FoxNews.com: www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/09/29/end-of-the-world-potential-armageddon/?test=facesIt's an article talking about the top 8 ways the earth and/or all life on it might end. I'm amazed at how close some of them appear to Revelation. Look at the one on the supernova that causes a massive blast of gamma rays. The sky rolls back like a scroll, the sun scalds the population, etc. God will do The End however He wants, but I always tend to think He'll work mainly within the physical rules He created. So maybe one of these scenarios will come to pass. And in the meantime, we can write about them! Jeff

Cool! Thanks for the link. Say... could Revelation actually be correct? ;D

I'm sure all of you have seen countless Sci-Fi movies where the earth is in danger of getting destroyed, mostly by asteroids. What always annoys me about these movies is, earth always gets saved! It is so predictable! Has anyone written a book or seen a film where the earth ends up destroyed? (I'm not bloodthirsty ... no, really...) The only example I can think of is Andromeda, series 5. Harper wants to return to earth to fight against the Nietzscheans, but earth explodes and totally disappears from space. It was quite stunning and unexpected. But then again, in this series Earth was just a minor, devastated planet.

Welcome, susanne!
Hey, I remember that Andromeda episode, too. Loved that series!
An oldie that includes Earth's destruction is a 1950's movie called When Worlds Collide.

Hmm interesting that this topic got a new post just after the apocalypse was predicted to happen. Or the Rapture rather. Thankfully, nothing happened on May 21st and I was able to graduate from college and go on with my life (though I guess if I'd been raptured that wouldn't have mattered). I didn't believe all that stuff about the May 21st Rapture though; after all, the Bible says we can't know the dates & times of the end of the world anyway, right?
I'm interested to see what Family Radio host Mr. Camping (whose claim this was) has to say to explain this non-event. So far all we've heard was that he and his followers were "flabbergasted" (their word) that the predicted end didn't happen.

I believe he said that God has decided to give us 5 months grace, and it is now all happening on October the 21st. This really annoys me, because it has an affect on non-Christians. I am part of the Star Trek group on FB, and we have been discussing the subject of religion. Now lots of folk there think Christianity is laughable, and the rapture will never happen anyway. Jesus himself said, only the Father knows the day and the time. Why do Christians even feel the need to predict the rapture/apocalypse? I don't ever hide the fact that I believe it will happen, but I would never presume to tell anyone the precise time. On a happier note, I am so glad someone besides me likes Andromeda. I always thought, the way Earth was portrayed in this series was fascinating: an unimportant, enslaved backwater planet.

I think this applies to Camping:
Romans 2:24 -- For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.
And ...
Deuteronomy 18:22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that [is] the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, [but] the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
He's batting 0 so far.
People who make these false predictions are doing so for their own glory. All they have to do is get something right once and they have star power ever after.

There's a fantastic animated movie from about 10 years ago called Titan A.E. A.E. is "after Earth," which is destroyed, on screen, before the movie's title is even displayed. I still have it on VHS.

I am a semi-retired pastor, an amateur astronomer for about 50 years and now I am considering writing a Christian Sci Fi, in fact I have written something, that I call "Far, Far Way" a mix of space travel and time travel with a Christian perspective. But I am confused, I thought that this Forum was about Christian Sci fi / Fantasy? Not attacking authors! Mr. Harold Camping is just one of many date setters; like Hal Lindsey and the "Latte Great Planet Earth" setting the date of 1976 and 1982, etc., and Jerry Falwell and 1997, and Billy Graham and 2000 and now, 2012. The date setters are many! I believe that this is a good thing, it keeps the pagan world on its toes, and the church too. Scoffers will come no matter what is written, that is life and a fulfillment of prophecy. I have known hundreds of pastors in my 65 years and they all believe that the return of Christ is near. Now let's get back to constructive criticism.
