I attended inservice meetings for my new job (YES!!) as 7th grade teacher at a Christian private school. The meetings were represented by 4-5 schools in my area.
On Wednesday, we had a speaker talking about worldview and how it affects everything we do as a teacher. I found his lecture riveting from the beginning; however, when he said Tolkien and Lewis were great examples of presenting the Christian worldview through literature in the 20th century, I knew I'd found a friend. He then went on to share his belief that J.K. Rowling has done the same thing in the 21st century. I was floored that he felt safe to share such a controversial opinion in front of a group that I had thought would be a little more conservative and "mainline" Christians that CBA would cater to. I was wrong; no one threw so much as an insult, let alone rotten veggies at him!!
The next day, one of my colleagues brought a stack of books about "Finding God in..." fairytales (which I have), Narnia, Middle Earth, etc. As I shared this morning, I think I've come home. I think I will have an awesome support group for pursuing my fiction in my off-time (what little I'll have as a new teacher!)!!
