I have a scene where I am stuck. There is a wizard (necromancer, to be precise) who needs to get rid of a demon guarding a book. The wizard is an apostate Christian, so does not have the power of Spirit to call upon. He's a necromancer not a summoner, so he doesn't know any spells for binding demons. He needs to get the book, but the demon is sitting on it. The mage is currently seeing all the warding spells on the book in a vision (but the wards he sees are all real). The intent of this spell is to show him the spells on the book so that he can break them.
Any thoughts?
I whispered the words to a powerful spell that would let me see what kind of warding magic she had placed on this book. The spell put me in a vision, and I saw the book grow until I was like an flea to it, or perhaps I shrank, I do not know.
Spell wards crisscrossed the outside of the book, looking like green lines. I moved between them. Oh, yes. Xandara didn't want me or anyone else to get into this book. The wards were spelled to not only notify her of tampering, but to destroy the book and everything in it.
Xandara probably had simple triggers to allow herself access. It might be a word that no one else would speak. Would she have taken the obvious spell word of "Darius"? No. That would be too easy.
As I pondered, I saw something else. She hadn't stopped with just warding spells. There was a tiny demon on the book. It wasn't much larger than I seemed to be, but I suspected it would first destroy the book instead of me. It was human shaped, thin, and green with scales and pointed teeth. How could I get past it?
He would surely defeat me in a direct confrontation. I couldn't send him back because summoners were the only mages who could control demons.
