Just venting ...
Spam from people you don't know is bad enough. But spam from people you do know, and on top of it from a place where your history is sad ... it verges on painful.
For reasons I'll leave unstated we withdrew our children from the school they had been attending. Yet we continue to get an email every time there is a class event. Not only did no one bother to say they were sorry to see us leave, but they can't even be bothered to remove our name from the class email list.

I've been there. It often takes a lot of prodding to get yourself removed. Sorry there was no recognition of your children's removal from the school. You'd think they'd at least say something like "Sorry to see you go". As far as the normal spam is concerned. one trick someone taught me to help filter out some of that is to use a separate email for websites you are unsure of. One thing I've noticed with Yahoo mail is, if you toss enough of a particular person's mail in the trash, eventually they all wind up in the spam folder. That has it's downside too. Now the notices I want to get from people I really want to hear from on Facebook get tossed in the spam folder along with the notices from other people that I normally just smile and nod at.
Hope that helps.
