Yeah, I grew up in England with the Archie comics, and also the Virgin press novels (all written under the pen name Martin Adams). When it came to Sonic Adventure 1+2 onward I have to admit it took a long hard time to deal with the clash of Western vs Japanese continuity. Thank God for SonicX, which finally blended the two to a near perfect mix while simultaneously making sense out of SA1 and SA2. Honestly, I couldn't stand all the additional characters back in the day (Shadow, Rouge, etc) but these days I've softened to them, although Silver can still vanish back to Crisis City lol

Shadow: Yeah, I grew up with the games, so I approach Sonic from the other direction--looking askance at the comics and cartoons, since they're all based on the games in the first place. I have varying love/hate relationships with the various characters (and did Shadow really die at the end of SA2? They had to give him his own game to ret-con that!).
Silver's always intrigued me, because he's the only Sonic character with a moral dilemma. Is it ever right to kill someone, even if you're doing it to alter the future and prevent the apocalypse? And his theme song, Dreams of an Absolution, speaks of this horrible subliminal guilt about what happened to Blaze.

Yes, I grew up with the games, also (my first time playing sonic 1 in 1991 will stay with me forever).
Also, the SatAm cartoon, and the Adventures of cartoon. lol All pretty weird.
I'm showing my age!
