Just wanted to give a heads up for some writing software that I found, called Plume Creator. It works on Linux and Windows, and is open source. It is still in the Beta stages, but is still pretty stable for those that would like to try it out. www.plume-creator.eu/site/ I have also started a Google+ page to help the developers get the name out there. I hope you check it.

Very cool. Looks similar to Scrivener, which is a pretty pricey app. This looks like a good alternative. Thanks for posting!

No problem. I got disappointed when the develpoers of Scrivenertold me they were not going to make an "official" branch for Linux. I even bought Scrivener for Win8, but Win8 went belly up on my computer so I went back to Linux. Didn't take long.
But the developers of Plume are a great group of guys and they are trying to make this, in my opinion, better. God Bless

Have you heard of Storybook? I used it for a while, after I heard about it on this forum, from this old thread. It's supposedly open source. One of the reasons that I stopped using it was because it seemed to be turning into adware for its "Pro" version. I never understood how that could work with an open source license, but I'm not a lawyer. At any rate, Storybook's website now says that the Pro version is "currently not available," but presumably the free version still is. If I remember correctly, Storybook works on Java, so it should probably work on all operating systems.

I use Celtx, great product. Has some advertisements but it does come compatible with any system I believe. Linux, Mac, and Windows. They don't push the upgrade too much in my opinion, I've had software that pushed it every time I booted up. Plus a lot of the formatting (for screenwriters, as an example) is built right in.
Also has a fantastic portion for notes and character profiles, no more thick notebooks of characters and plot points. That alone saved the Amazon rainforest from my previous usage.

I've always used a combo of a notebook and LibreOffice, but I'm always willing to check things out

I loved Scrivener and actually bought it for Windows, but after windows failed on me, I went on my search. Scrivener will not be made official for Linux, so I started using Plume Creator. The first time I tried it a year ago, I did not like it. But, it is getting updated all the time and is now really nice. The developer is pretty good about keeping the bugs out and working them out before he releases a version. I volunteer my time to help with tutorials and such to help the team out, so I get to see all the updates and the planning. This software is on the way to becoming a really nice alternative to some others out there. Right now it does not have spell check, but it's in the work. I keep information and videos on Plume creator on Google+ at plus.google.com/b/116988132614093911879/116988132614093911879/posts/p/pub. Right now there are only two vids but there will be more to come. I hope y'all like it. God Bless.

I have been using yWriter for a few years. It fits my needs very nicely. It's free and built by a professional writer and software developer. That may be why it fits me (I program for my day job). One very nice thing is that I can export for proofing and do corrections and additions on lunch then import that back in later.

Due to the lack of haveing a Mac for testing. Once the final 1.0 is out, the developer plans to compile for Mac every couple of releases.
