I'll be there, too! And sorry...I have a roommate. We room together each year! However, if you can't find a roomie, you might check out the ACFW forums, or post a message on the main loop (as list hostess, I can tell you that one message about that is allowed. ;D).

That's odd, there's a post missing.
Jeff -- is your late night chat only for sci-fi, or can fantasy writers come too?

Ooh, definitely come! They've listed it as only SF?
No, we've not reached the point in Christian publishing where we have to subdivide in the speculative genres. I'm not sure I want to get to that point...

I'll be there.
We've had a SFF writer's get together one of the early evenings the past few years. I haven't heard of anything yet for this year, but we can always plan our own in addition to the late night chat.

I've just submitted a question to be asked at the Editor's panel, and it was:
With speculative fiction doing well in the secular market -- stories of vampires, dragons, wizards and magic -- is the CBA seeking to meet the Christian (and the world's) need for fantasy novels that point to Jesus Christ?
Hopefully it will be asked at the panel and hopefully a postive answer given! We can only pray.

Variations of that question have been asked at the edtiors/agent panel nearly every year I've been there (4 years now). Will be interesting to see how they react this year.
Usually it's been a mixture of absolutely no! Sure! and If the writing is good enough we'd consider it.
One thing different for this year is being able to point out how mainline television has really embraced the speculative fiction genre. This shows just how much of an audience is out there in a concrete way I think. All these shows wouldn't be showing up if people weren't wanting them.
Just this fall & Winter: Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles (Season 2) The Fringe Heroes (season 3) Chuck (season 3?) Eli Stone (medical visions or a prophet?) Pushing Daisies (season 2) Knight Rider Life on Mars (Modern cop in 1973) Smallville (Season 7 now?) Supernatural (season 3?) Ghost Whisperer (season 3 or 4?) Lost Reaper Merlin (arthurian legend retold) Dollhouse
That's quite a surge for this fall & winter.
Also, for those interested, one of the ACFW members has managed to set up a dinner on Friday Night with Christian ABA Author Lars Walker. Once i'm sure the details are set I'll post them all here. Should be quite a fun lead-up to the late night chat!

The Barbarian Queen strikes again? Hooray for our side.
You're right: rumor has it, interested parties will meet Friday, 6:30, at the hotel restaurant to dine with Lars Walker.
Anyone know if he's actually going to be at the conference?

Lars Walker? How cool! MAN, I wish I could go. Hey, Vaporwolf, is this Merlin series you mention a continuation of the Sam Neill show, or something different?

No, Lars won't be at the conference. He just lives close by.
Ok, stupid questin I'm sure -- but who is he and what has he written?
Oh, I guess I could just go check Amazon, huh?
Really doens't matter too much, I'm having dinner with my agent. Guess I'm glad I'm not a huge fan or then I'd be torn.

Crimson and Vapor,
I do hope they ask the panel this question. However, it has been my experience that what the secular market embraces has not always been a source of peer pressure for the CBA industry. Especially if it involves trigger content, like vampires, ghosts, ESP, etc. Then Christian publishers tend to dig in their heels and say, "If you want that kind of garbage you can get it from the world. As for me and my (publishing) house, we will serve the Lord."
;-)

Hey, Vaporwolf, is this Merlin series you mention a continuation of the Sam Neill show, or something different? It's something totally different. After looking at NBC's little promo site for it I'd say it's closer to Smallville. Merlin is an exciting fantasy series set in the mythic city of Camelot, but inspired by 21st Century storytelling.
Before Merlin and Arthur became legends, they were ambitious young men looking for adventure, hoping to live up to their families' expectations, discovering love and finding their own true destiny, making mistakes along the way.
This innovative, action-packed drama has cross-generational appeal and paints a picture of Merlin and Arthur's early life that audiences have never witnessed before. There is definetly that response from so many houses, which is why I'm so excited for MLP and what it is going to do. I don't think that should keep us from making the argument that by ignoring the genre and calling it garbage they are losing the opportunity to reach generations of people who wouldn't touch anything else in the core genres. But again, that's where places like MLP will be picking up the slack and showing them what they are missing out on.
