After reading some of the prayers posted here, it seems a lot is going on for all of us (cancer, health, even the death of loved ones). Know that my heart and prayers are going up for you guys!
My twin son (2yrs old) was sick Thanksgiving day and it grew worse that night. My two daughters and I were sick the week before so I didn't think much of it other than it seemed worse for him. So I slept with him to keep watch over him. At one point during the night, my husband and I discussed going to the ER, but decided to go to the doctor the next morning.
Early that morning, my son turned blue and stopped breathing. My husband, a trained first responder immediately did CPR while I called 911. Since we live a few miles away from a small town, it was faster for us to drive him to the hospital than wait for the ambulance. On the way, he stopped breathing again and went limp. I began CPR while my husband drove 90mph. I thought we had lost him.
At the ER, they immediately went into action and were able to revive him. Since it was a tiny hospital, they transferred us via ambulance to the next hospital 30 minutes away.
He continued to have breathing problems at this next hospital and the attending pediatrician felt it prudent to fly us to Portland since she wasn't sure if he would take a turn for the worse, a situation they were not prepared for at this hospital. So my son and I were loaded on Lifeflight while my husband began the long drive to Portland. Personal note, I hate flying (intense fear of heights) and the only thing that got me on that tiny plane was my son... and during the flight God placed his hand on me and I didn't have one panic attack!
At the children's hospital, he was put in ICU and every imaginable test was performed. It wasn't until I climbed into the crib with him and let him fall asleep in my arms and he slept for a couple of hours did he start improving. We spent 2 days at the hospital. Every test came back negative. The only one still out is viral, so in the end, they said he had a form of Super Croup that had lodged itself just below his vocal cords (the narrowest part of his throat) which caused his throat to swell almost shut.
As of now, we are home. He is still very weak, but trying to do the things he normally enjoys (playing, eating, talking). We were a bit worried about brain damage, but with little signs of normalcy returning, we feel relieved.
I ask for prayer for a complete recovery of my son (if God wills) as well as my husband and I and our other children. Our older son is especially trying to comprehend what happened (he asked if Caleb was dying when his little brother turned blue) and we had to leave so fast that he was left at the house alone with his 2 little sisters until we could get a hold of friends to run to the house and take care of them. He keeps talking about it and cried last night when he couldn't find me (I think he thought we had left again). He's only 6, but very intelligent and is working out what happened.
Thank you on behalf of my family.
