The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most pleasant deity of the ancient world; protective and proud of it; a meticulous, just, forgiving, structure-advocate; a pragmatic, impartially-symbiotic ethnic creator; a women-avenging, sexuality-designing, orphan-protecting, child-defending, slave-respecting, justice-enforcing, empathetic, long-suffering guardian.
The God of the New Testament is arguably the most sacrificial of religious founders; impartial and proud of it; a religious-hypocrisy intolerant; an ardent, prayer-engrossed temple cleanser; a women-dignifying, child-elevating, enemy-loving, torturer-forgiving, disease-healing, soul-saving, life-giving, death-conquering, sin-paying liberator.
The above is a response to Richard Dawkins' now renowned, long-winded, loquaciously garrulous paragraph of insults against the Judaeo-Christian God, which says:
The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction; jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, blood-thirsty ethnic cleanser; a, misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.
And so before he decides to attack Jesus with an equally long list of adjectives aimed at destroying Christ's character, I beat him to it.

Good descriptions! The old testament is full of God's patient, enduring love. Its the people who are unpleasant, jealous, petty, unjust, unforgiving, etc... And yet, God loves them (and us too!) and constantly is asking them to repent and come back to him.

I think you should post Dawkins' original diatribe so that people can read these side-by-side. I've already said that I love this elsewhere, so I won't repeat myself here (too much). Except to say well done.

As my old logic prof never tired of telling us, argument ad hominem (or in this case ad deum) is no argument at all.
Richard Dawkins' little diatribe hasn't earned a response.

Sounds like Mr. Dawkins is under some conviction....I've noticed that people tend to get over-emotional (i.e. name-calling) when they haven't a leg to stand on.

It reminds me of the old joke about a pastor's speaking notes for himself.
"Logic weak here. Pound pulpit harder."

Anthony Flew died April 8th. For a long time he was the chief philosophical voice for atheism. People like Richard Dawkins used his arguments as "proof" for the rationality of his own atheistic belief. But in 2005 Anthony Flew came to believe that God did indeed exist. He gave an interview (parts of it are on You Tube) by way of apology because he felt he had led so many astray with his university lectures and writing.
The great irony in his life was that his father was a Methodist minister. Flew never got beyond a deistic notion of God, which is sad. He never believed in the God of the Bible, or in Jesus as Savior. However, it can be encouraging for Christians that change is possible for the opposition.
As Jesus said (Matt 5:44), pray for your enemies. May Anthony Flew rest in peace.

I think its funny that Richard Dawkins, wrote went on rant about there being no purpose in the Athiest lifestyle (I don't remember the exact quote exactly) but it was something like, "They complain (other athiests) that athiesm doesn't have a purpose for life. Well, you know what that true, and you better get used to it. If you can't, well that's tough."
The funny, self-refuting thing about this is that Richard Dawkins doesn't believe in a purpose for life, but militantly believes that its his purpose in life to tell people there is no purpose in life. I think that's enough said. Sometimes intelligence can make you blind.

Ever hear the old saying, "Educated beyond his intelligence"?

Amen to this!
GOD = LOVE
Richard Dawkins seems to be expressing his hate based on his emotions, and through his own self-loathing. He's dead wrong! You can't find the answers through yourself.
