I'm sure that I misspelled her name, but that's not what matters. Let me start at the beginning.
Breanne is my wife's brother-in-law's 15 year old sister. Nine months ago, we found out that her, much older, fiance/boyfriend got her pregnant. I was shocked, Jamie was amused. For that family, 15 is about right. Just something about them.
Three or four months into the pregnancy, her doctor performed an ultrasound and gave her some terrible news: her Amniotic fluid, I think, was gone. Not low... non-existent. The doctor's advice was to terminate the pregnancy immediately. The ultrasound further condemned the child by showing his complete lack of kidneys. They gave the child somewhere between 0% and .5% chance of survival.
It turns out that Breanne is not able to stay hydrated for long periods of time and, thus, neither was her child. Rather than recommend an infusion, the doctor basically told her to go home and wait for the child to pass... or speed things up a bit.
At this point, we really didn't know what shape the child was in. True, the ultrasound didn't show the kidneys, but that does not mean that they weren't there. Breanne refused to give up on her child. During the rest of her pregnancy, she drank enough water to drown a fish and, miraculously, her fluid levels rose to a safe level. The doctors called it a miracle, especially when the child lived to term.
Within twenty four ours of his birth, infant Shawn Matthew Dahrouge passed away due to blood toxicity, insufficient oxygen supply to the brain, and other complications caused by his tiny size and lack of Kidneys and Liver. He didn't have a chance, but Breanne was able to hold her baby till he passed.
My request, no my plea, is that you pray for this young mother and... my own forgiveness. I should have brought this here so much sooner. I don't know if it would have made any difference, but it doesn't change the fact. Anytime I think of that little child I get choked up, knowing the life he'll never get to experience, but I also praise God for the little bit of life he did get, for had she followed the doctor's orders, he wouldn't even have gotten that much.
