Hey folks, another noob here. I'm Chivalrybean/Justin and I found out about this site from Marcher Lord press and the press from Snark Infested Waters. I'm a writer, entertainer, performer. As of now, I only perform online, mostly in Second Life. I write basically whatever, but heavy on the genre fiction side of things, sci-fi, steampunk, and horror are my main things, but I'll write fantasy if I have an idea or 'regular' fiction at times as well. Not all has an obvious 'Christian' theme, but I try to have themes that echo my beliefs. Some other stories which I have not yet written will have heavy Christian themes, such as contemplating salvation while stuck in a building with violent possessed folks. (It's actually a lot cooler, but saving the details for now {;0) I have some stories up at www.thespaceturtle.com. mixed with my blog. I plan to sell short fiction directly from my site, on the Kindle and if I can Apple App Store. I don't hang around on too many forums, but this one appears to give me a reason to start hanging around more.

oOO! Another new guy! Welcome to the Anomaly! You know, every time we get a new person here at the Anomaly, an Angel gets a pimple. Yeah, I know, but all the good reactions were taken.
Make yourself at home!
God bless -- CS

Greetings. I have always wondered (OK, not always) what is steampunk? Or don't I want to know? I fixed the dot {:0) Steampunk ... how to define. Some examples: Steamboy (anime) Around the world in 80 Days (the Jackie Chan version), Wild Wild West (The Will Smith Version) While only the first example is actually a really good movie, they all have elements of steampunk to some degree. The setting is normally Victorian times, but there is more advanced tech, but it runs on steam power for the most part. That's a weak explanation, but it's a start. I'm still not entirely sure how to explain it. It's like the Matrix, you gotta see it, not be told {:0p It you read Johnny Copperwire and the Exploding Boiler on my site, that's another example.

Welcome, chivalrybean.
As I understand it, steampunk is fiction that is usually set in the Victorian era (1837-1901) or Edwardian era (1901-1910) and features steam-powered technology, but has elements of sci-fi or fantasy.
I haven't seen Steamboy, but from what I have heard about it, that would certainly be an example of steampunk. The anime movies Metropolis and Laputa: Castle in the Sky are steampunk also. (I disliked Metropolis though and found it boring; it's loosely based on the 1927 Fritz Lang silent film of the same name, which is a boring film that drags on for 2 hours - a really long running time for a silent film - and is clearly the inspiration for almost every robot film since).
As for book examples, The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau comes to mind, since steam was what powered the whole city. The heroine Lyra's world in the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman seems very steampunk too, since it is Victorian in feel but has some technology as well, such as carriages powered by "anbaric power," an alternative to electricity.

Belated hello, Chiv. May I call you that? Good, because deterrents are ineffective on me.
Steampunk attracts my attention. It's on my to-do list, once I'm done with the rampaging barbarian schtick. I shall have to read your site.

Bean, I dig steampunk (among other sci-fi subgenres)...ever see Castle in the Clouds, by Hayao Miyazaki? There's also an incredible animated video on Youtube titled "The Mysterious Explorations of Jasper Morello", sort of a "Verne meets Poe" thing. Glad you made it here! Hope you decide to hang out for a while! -Tony
