I'm a senior English major finishing up my degree. I have two classes left and plan to graduate May 2010 (if I survive Shakespeare class). God told me to go into English. He gave me the talent and skill to write stories and other things. I don't know what job to look for or where to put my resume in. I do know that I have no interested in teaching English. I'm leaning towards editing because I enjoy proofreading and editing friends school papers. If not editing, then writing of some kind.
Sometimes the fear of not being good enough and the fear of failure creep in my mind preventing me from wanting to search for a job.
Please pray that God will show me what job he wants me to get and that the fears won't keep me from doing what God wants me to do.
Thanks.

Praying for you, Wolfie!
Shakespeare is survivable. Does your class concentrate on the plays or the sonnets (or combine a history/comedy/tragedy with the poems)? I actually grew quite fond of some of his work. I had one semester that required Hamlet for three classes, which was challenging because each professor concentrated on a different aspect of it. A lot of people get intimidated by his older version of English; but it's not as far removed from our own English as Chaucer's English in the Canterbury Tales or the Anglo-Saxon of Beowulf.
Just remember that his plays are scripts for performances. If your class is covering plays that have been performed on film, it's worth the effort to check them out. It will help them make more sense even though the movies edit out anything that makes the film too long.
Hamlet has several screen versions -- the ones featuring Sir Laurence Olivier and (more recently) Mel Gibson are excellent. Othello with Orson Wells as the lead character is also wonderful. There was a movie of Julius Caesar that had an all-star cast back in the 70's (I think -- lost track of which decade) that really brought it to life. Others I've watched include Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew, Midsummer Night's Dream (feature length cartoon version), The Tempest (a stage performance -- don't know if it's been filmed), and Macbeth (PBS performance? -- can't recall exactly).
As for fears, I would encourage you to turn them over to God. He does not want us to be fearful. Washed in Christ's blood, you are good enough for what He wants you to do in this world.
Failure is a learning opportunity -- school doesn't end when you get your degree, it just becomes less formally structured. But also realize that just because something does or doesn't happen in your life when you think it should, it's not automatically failure. Often, it's God at work in your life, altering your circumstances, building up a wealth of experience for you to draw upon later. This can only happen over time and it's His timing, not ours.
I, too, was an English major in college. Employment includes machinist, dog (and other pet) groomer, electronics assembler & inspector, security officer (& later shift supervisor), receptionist/assistant in veterinary clinic. No job I held specifically used what I learned in English -- but when I sit down to work on a story, the observations and experiences I've had through the years in these unrelated careers add dimensions to my stories that I could not have gained any other way. I praise God for allowing me the versatility.
He has plans for what you learn in each employment even if fully using it is decades down the road. Trust Him to open the jobs for you that further His purpose in your life and to close those jobs (however attractive they might be) that risk enticing you from His plans for you.

Prayers Away, Wolfie! Just a word of caution: God often waits till the last minute before giving word on what's next. It's hectic, but try and relax and let Him have control. Believe me, it's worth it.

Ain't that the truth! God wants us to rely on Him rather than on our plans.
