Friends,
My son will be having his thyroid removed this Thursday. He inherited a genetic condition that will cause his thyroid to become cancerous later. So, the surgeon wants it out before that has much chance to happen. Ben will be 5 months old the day of the surgery. It will be at a children's hospital in St. Louis with one of the best thyroid surgeons in the US.
Please pray for Ben and us, his parents.

Definitely.
How scary for you guys.
The good news is that he probably won't remember much about it.
Our son had eye surgery when he was 11 days old. Doesn't remember it.
Then later he had another eye surgery when he was 2.5 years old. That one, he remembers. He's still got emotional issues over it, we think. He distinctly remembers (as do we) being carried away by hospital personel through those parents-can't-follow double doors.
In other words, younger is better for things like this.
Let us know how it goes.

My prayers are with you, too. My youngest had surgery three times by the time he was 5 years old; tubes in his ears (minor), a liver biopsy, (not so minor) and his adenoids removed, (also minor but still scary). He's now 25 years old and while he doesn't like hospitals, he's gotten over most of his fears. He had surgery again when he was 17; he had a tympanoplasty done to repair a damaged eardrum and correct a 40% hearing loss. Complete success to the point he was allowed to enlist in the Coast Guard.
It is amazing what our medical science can accomplish and even more amazing what our Great Physician can do. He can even help the fear and trauma that results afterwards.
It's always hard when our children are hurting. I'd rather they cut me up than my babies. I sympahtize completely and I will remember you in my prayers.

I've set up this site to keep everyone updated on Ben. He's in surgery right now, and, yes, I hated those double doors.
Thank you for all your prayers.

I hate those double doors, tool. When Jay was 3 and had to have the liver biopsy done, I was terrified. I was only, what, 24 at the time? Anyway, we were having the surgery done at the Brooks Army Medical there in San Antonio because Jay's dad was active duty AF and we had been up early of course, and I was scared and totally focused on my little baby. I will never forget that day. I told Jay I loved him, they took him through those double doors, and I walked about 20 yards down the hall to the waiting room, looked at the TV and watched Challenger explode. I think I just about lost it. All the nurses and doctors were absolutely riveted to the screen. I kept hearing "If anybody survives, they'll bring 'em here." The military major burn unit is there. But we all knew, just from watching, there were no survivors. It was so overwhelming. I think I cried for half an hour, and I still don't know if I was crying for Jay, for me or for the families that were affected. Maybe for all of us.
My prayers are with you. Don't watch TV today.

Thank You, Father, for a successful surgery. Please heal Ben completely. Protect his parents and grandparents and others as they drive to and from the hospital. Amen.

Two weeks after surgery and Ben is so much his old self. He was pretty much his old self by the time we got home. God worked in this. Ben had one of the top thyroid surgeons in the US and was at one of the top children's hospitals. And Ben charmed the nurses all to pieces.

Yours is wonderful news, fluke. I'm really pleased for you. Our church will be happy, too, as Benjamin and his family have been in our prayers. We give thanks to the Lord for He is Good.
