First off, thanks to DtW for the name. I need to put that here so I remember to give you millions in royalties. Just as soon as I earn billions.
With my gracious forummates' permission, I thought I'd make a thread for this one novel so I have one place to put all my whines and brags and questions and such. It was based off of this thread:
wherethemapends.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=genresf&action=display&thread=183
I'm finished with the 78th draft, but only half-way through taking it to writers' group. It's about an American pilot in 2111 who crashes on Venus to find it's inhabited with pre-Flood refugees. It assumes a young-Earth creationist timeline. (Although, if you asked me to give you my belief, I'd give you a big, fat, "I dunno.") Nothing occurs in the novel, however, prior to 1902, and that's just the prologue. Everything else is in 2111.
I'm looking at about 98,200 words, right now, give or take. I'm not happy with the chapter breaks, but I just spent a couple of hours putting in dates for the scenes. That was lovely. I had to calculate Earth dates plus Venus dates. Venus dates start from when the refugees first arrived (2484 BC) and, of course, correspond not to the Venus year, but the Venus day which is about 243 of our days. Then I had to figure out the season of each location (seasons vary according to longitude like our hours), and work out the flow of the time without disrupting the narrative. You wouldn't want your protagonist traveling during a toxic rain of sulfuric acid, would you? Well, not unless you needed more drama for the story. At any rate, I love Excel.
That's where I'm at with VoV. Look for fascinating info on its sequel, Center of Gravity. I'm about half finished with the first draft.
As a reward for those who made it through this entire post, I give you a question: I've found sites that will give you an orbital calendar, but I've never found one where you can enter the year. Instead, you usually have to start at the date it gives you and watch the little planets go around and around until it hits the dates you want. Would anyone happen to know where I can find a site that would give me orbits for a given year? 'Cus I'm way too lazy to calculate them, right now.
