This will be my first year doing it. I'm kinda nervous, as the first book I wrote took four years for the first draft, and the book I'm working on now is at 34,000 words after ten months. This will be.... interesting... As for what I'm doing, I thought about adding 50k of words to the project I'm working on now, but that makes it rather hard to track... I don't like having multiple project's going on, but I figured I'd make an exception for NaNoWriMo and start book two in the Guardian Chronicles: Threat From The Past. Once the contest is started I'll post some excerpts up on my blog so everyone can laugh at horrible a rushed first draft is.

I "friend" the NaNoWriMo LJ community and so I've been reading about it for a while now. I'm thinking about doing it but I'm really nervous about it. I've never done it before, though a writing forum I was a part of in the past did a similar challenge (just during a different month) which I did, but I didn't do very well (I couldn't keep to the "write every day" schedule and only ended up writing about 5,000 words by the end of the month). Somebody on Twitter told me to try it (after I tweeted about it on my writing Twitter), saying all I have to lose is my sanity. But I don't even know how it all works. So I just don't know...

Started a book last year, scrapped most of it though and started over. This year I'll probably just add 50k words to my current project, which should just about finish it (then on to editing; oh joy).

Yeah, I went crazy last night and registered. I've been noodling a story for at least half a year, despite long-standing writer's block. So, with the clock ticking to countdown, there are two secondary characters, an antagonist, a VERY vague principle character, and an incomplete plot--which keeps changing on me. 50,000 words in one month? Easy peasy.

I tried last year and failed (November was NOT a good month for my writing life last year, I hit rock bottom like I hadn't for four years.) However, given that this year has been going marvelously, I thought I'd give NaNo another chance. I'm tweaking the rules a bit to fit into what my writing schedule requires, so I'm only writing a novella that will hopefully it 20-25K. I figure it will ease me into writing a required word count every day without overwhelming me. Here's the "back cover" blurb I posted on my blog for the project, A BARGAIN WITH AN ELF (the blurb itself is slightly cliche, but I figure I can change that): "If Blade hadn't stolen that page, I wouldn't be in this mess. But he did, and here I am, right in the middle of it--aiding a thief. Not what I pictured my calling would be." When an elvish thief, Blade, steals an important relic from Torfre's cave, the draco is forced to help him to keep the relic out of the wrong hands. But the more he's drawn into Blade' criminal world, the less he understands. And when he discovers Blade's most important secret, Torfre is left with an agonizing choice that may well cost him his life. (And so everyone knows, in my world, a draco is a shapeshifter who has the ability to turn from dragon to human, but not any other forms). Looking forward to hearing how everyone does!

Ooooooh, I so want to do NaNo this year, but I've been telling myself that I won't. I started NaNo way back in 2007 and used 07 and 08 to write the sequels for my current work-in-progress. but didn't make the word count, but i did finish the stories. In 09 I wrote a completely different story and actually reached the 50,000. 2010 wasn't happening, though, I tried. My little girl was born 11-30, a week early and I finished that month with only 13,000 words and I was trying to finish a mural at our church nursery before I had her. (side note: the day I had her, I had put the last finishing touches on the painting, then went to my baby-shower and then my water broke.) NaNo is an awesome opportunity to take a break from what your currently working on and get some other stories flowing and going, because once your project is finished, then it is on to the next, and then the next. It keeps those creative juices flowing. You get a chance to take a break from your editor self and get to put on your creative hat. Though, I do like to outline and do what I can to get characters names, backstory, place names, and stuff like that before hand. But even if you don't you can say, Port A or use some other kind of placeholder name for it. I encourage you to get out there and attempt it. Even if you don't reach the word count, you will be closer to getting your story written than you were before. This year I keep telling myself I won't do it...but somewhere in the recess of my soul the urging to participate remains. I'm choosing to focus, instead, on finishing up this novel that I've been working on for the past six years and then on to the next project. Plus, with a three year old and a one year old...I'm still learning how to roll with the punches. anyways, that was long. But NaNo is awesome, I hope you guys go for it. and...maybe...I just might resurrect my NaNo project from last year....hmmm...no. can't. shouldn't. argh! Happy Writing!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who uses placeholder names. I'm horrible at naming things.
In the fantasy I'm working on now, the characters are currently just outside Fillintownname.

I'm glad to see so many people trying it! Waldenwriter: Basically it's just a gimmick to get you to write a set amount of words every day, and at the end you'll have a novel. I think you're supposed to log in every day and compare your word count with people. It's one of those semi-competitive fun sorts of things. I'm 3/4ths of the way through a story at the moment, and I'm already writing a bit every night. I don't need the pressure of Nano because I already pressure myself worse than they ever could. :-p Also, my husband is happy whenever I write on it, since it's his characters. That's the best motivator there is.

Kessie: is that more in the SpaceTime series? I read the middle book and loved it (not sure why I started there...), I have to read the first one now. You should post that on Smashwords or something...

I am participating this year and plan on finishing ‘God’s Gift’. Don’t really care if I make 50,000 words or not. I ‘win’ if I finish the book.
Last year was the first time I did NNWM. I did win because I finished with over 52,000 words. Am planning on revising it – again – in December and am considering a line at Harlequin – Love Inspired Suspense – to submit it to.
January I begin work on the sequel to ‘Winder Awakening’, available on Amazon or Smashwords, ‘Winter Emergence’ then right over to the last book of the trilogy ‘Winter Moon’.
I’m also planning a line called ‘The Doll house Stories’. I’m thinking they’re going to contain paranormal themes. Not sure yet – am waiting to see.

You should post that on Smashwords or something... Yes, I'm writing the third Spacetime story ... wait ... how did you read the second book? To my knowledge it's only had two chapters posted online! The first one is up in all of its unedited grandeur, though. Edit: After going back and looking at the site (duh), the one you read is the first book. The other one is a prologue with some characters who haven't otherwise been released publicly yet. I'm glad you liked it! I need to get my tail in gear and get the second one edited and uploaded.

I did NaNo last year in November, and I participated in Camp NaNoWriMo this year in July, which was a new venture with NaNo. It was awesome! I was able to "pour" my words and story onto the page.
The story I want to do this time... I'm debating if I want to do the second book of the trilogy I'm working on (the first which I completed in July) the first book of a different trilogy I'm working on, that's semi paper-drafted, a story that I have been thinking of for about two years, or a story that I partially wrote up for my class assignment back in 2010.
*Sigh* So many options.

Um... 0?
Hehe, yesterday wasn't a good start. I'm trying to get all sorts of administrative stuff done for Grad school and get projects in line for three different upper division CS courses. I foresee a fun month ahead. ;D
