Fraid I won't be doing it this year. Too much on my plate to devote the time during Nov.
Maybe next year.

Day 1-103 words. Day 2-So far, 1070, with more planned soon. *sigh* This month is looking busier than I thought, between edits that came in on other projects, NaNo, and social commitments. Yes, I have a very hard time saying "no"...

I think November is a lousy time to do Nano. They should set it in June instead.

Slow start but picked up speed yesterday. Shooting for a productive weekend. Working on finishing this project, conceptually begun in 2005: wherethemapends.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=projects&action=display&thread=2038I'm a NaNo Rebel, since I'm continuing a project I already have writing on paper for, rather than starting from scratch. I want a complete first draft by Christmas. Dragonlots--glad to see another Rebel!

Yes, it should be a summer thing, I agree. I won't be able to do it next year, at least on their terms, if I'm entering grad school in the Fall.

Last year I averaged just over 1500 words a day and got to 60K. I guess I'm doing an unsanctioned NNWM working on editing "Zander" and doing the rough draft of my short story for Dragonlots' anthology. How about we "Unsanctioned NNWM" types keep track and spur each other on here in the Anomaly? We could start a new thread and call it something like "Anomalous Generic Writers Month"; AGWM, or Agawam for short. Now that has a wring to it. All in favor raise your wright hand! What'da ya' say? Sounds like a good idea, Dave. Does editing others' works in addition to our own count? Juggling multiple projects here as well as final prep work for the writers' conference next week. And the art work, too. ;D

It seems to me that any kind of writing related activity with a "processed" wordcount could work. That's the great thing, we can design it to be anything we want.
I was thinking of something to make our solitary writing activities more of a group supported exercise with some kind of accountability to a group of like-minded peers. My experience with local writing groups, mixed Christian and Non-Christian, was very disappointing.
So if you have some ideas about how we could quantify our activities like: draft generation, self-editing, reviewing and editing for others throw them out here. The thing I found most helpful from NaNoWriMo was the group reporting (bragging rights) of my initial draft writing against my agreed upon targets.
If we Anomaliens can support each other in something like that I believe it could use the Anomaly to be a real value add to the Christian Sf community here.
Shall I set up a separate thread for the AGAWAP* project so we can thrash it out and see what flies?
*Anomalous Generic Ancillary Writing Activities Project? ;D (Okay, I not a great name generator; suggest something better)

Dave: That sounds like fun! I'm in the midst of finishing up my little time travel short story (just have the climax left) and I'm going to begin work on editing another story that's been resting for six months. Oh, hey, did you ever get your power back on, Dave?
Also, Jeff Gerke had a Webinar on the first 50 pages of your novel, and I'm going to be editing my other story with his tips in mind. As well as his tips over on MLP. Maybe the story will improve!

I'm in NaNo at the moment. So far, I've managed to keep up with the required 1,670 words per day. I dropped my original CSF epic two days before the start when it became really obvious I wasn't going to have a first draft after 50,000 words. Instead I'm trying a little bit of literary fiction without a space or fantasy theme. At least it forces me to learn how to work steadily to a word count, and that seems to matter a lot from what I've read.

So here I sit, 5 days into the thing, and I'm already almost 6k words behind. But do not fear, for I shall retake the ground that is lost and strike through, triumphant, to the finish!
I think that the AGAWAP project sounds like a nice idea. I've decided that I'm going to make December a NaNoWriMo as well, and probably January and February too (I might take a month off somewhere for outlining and planning). That would definitely come under the head of 'unsanctioned NNWM', wouldn't it?
I'm not really a big fan of sharing my work until I feel that I've reached a 'first draft' stage in my book (unlike experienced people, I can't just write out an acceptable first draft in one go). So while I'm all for moral support, I'd probably hold back for a bit on giving samples of my work. Maybe a chapter or two to generate interest/see if it's even understandable. I'd probably jump in readily early next year though.
However, I happen to be super competitive. So I don't know about anyone else, but if those of us who had the specific goal of 50k wordcounts rephrased NaNoWriMo into something like "the race for 50k", I'd probably be able to punch out a lot higher wordcount.

rjj7, I'm in word count trouble, too. I had writer's block yesterday! Dave, this sounds like a great idea! I'm in NaNo this month and can't commit to more, but I would love to in future. Could it also be tailored for us will-be graduate school students so that when we have no life we might be able to find some sort of writing productivity besides writing papers?

This would work great for me, too. When I have a story to work on, I like to expand my file by 6k per night. (k as in kilobytes, no idea what that translates to in word count). But right now I'm going into an editing phase, so it'd be nice to drop in and go, "I edited for an hour and a half tonight while listening to very loud techno!"

All
So it sounds like the AGAWAP project is worth trying.
I envision the Anomaly side of it to be strictly a "word count against goal" and "you wouldn't believe what happened ..." kind of tracking and discussion forum so we can share writing experiences and encourage each other to keep our BOCFAC going. We'll have to experiment with the formats or work out some protocols to see what works best. I'm not sure what the Pro-Boards will support.
We could use the Sandbox for sharing/troubleshooting troublesome passages or getting critiques (since it is a secure site) I wouldn't advise posting anything here on the anomaly that we we might want to submit for publication. The Anomaly is an open forum that anyone can find with a Google search and read. (see the note linked to the Copyrights link in my signature line below the post).
I'll do some planning and set something up in a bit.

I'm at 12,518 words so far, averaging 1,800ish words per day.
Dave: that sounds like an awesome idea. This place is the best writing group I've ever found, and that kind of support from a great group of people is... great...(Note to self, wake up more before writing today...)
Kessie: Yes, techno is awesome to write to!
