Kind of a random contribution here, but a friend of mine has been writing a novel in which Satan (the serpent in the Garden) is a dragon, and dragons in our world now are his spawn. I'll see if he has any polished chapters that might stand alone. I have no idea of what his plot may be.

earthtrekker,
If your friend is interested please have him read the guidelines first BEFORE sending anything. I'm very specific about how belief systems can be represented and length. I'd suggest he write a stand alone short story - not submit a chapter from his book. If he sells his work, he could have some problems and lose a potential contract over it. One of those funny little things about publishers you have to know. They're very territorial.

Hi Dana,
I've now got a complete draft of the story I promised. I've redrafted it as I've gone on, so its more than just a first draft. I will now leave it a couple of weeks, redraft and then post on the AnomalousSandbox for critique.
It's been a long process because of domestic and day job interuptions (I unexpectedly found myself going to Singapore last week, for example). I also needed to do serious research -including reading KS Robinson's Antartica, which is as much a travelogue/information dump as it is a novel! As a scientist I wanted to make sure that there wasn't too much "rubber science" in it.
It currently sits at 6700. Of course, in the processes outlined above, pruning will happen, but it would be useful to know how strict your 6000 word limit is. To loose 700 words I probably have to take out a scene from somewhere...therefore its good to know the parameters I need to work to at this point.
Thanks,
Chris

cdeb,
I already have a word count from my editor on length. Since I'm expecting many submissions for DD I do have to adhere pretty close to the guidelines at 6000 words. (There are a couple of exceptions but I knew very early they were coming in.) Now granted, that could change depending on how many stories I get, but as of right now, I need writers to bring in their word counts at what I asked.
One thing I advise all writers to do is take a poetry class. Not only do you learn all the tricks of the trade but it also teaches how to chose the right words and to do so within specific parameters.

Thanks DB,
That makes things clear, I will revise accordingly.. Thx for the suggestion about poetry, I hadn't thought about it in that way. As for making things more concise, I've had a lifetime of getting applications into minimum word count limits, so hopefully I can manage it.

Just a reminder that 12/31/2012 is the deadline for Different Dragons. Am hoping to see a dragon tale from many of you.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten all about this. I have a couple of drafts I could redraft into a decent short story, I think. :-)

Hey, Dana.
I wrapped up a 4400-ish word contemporary fantasy (waiting for crits/feedback) to submit for consideration.
I may have simply missed it, but as I went back through previous posts, I couldn't find whether to pitch/query before submitting. Or just send the submission.
What's your preference?

Big news!
If I get all the stories promised me from MileHiCon pitches, the Sandbox and reprints - we will have enough for a Vol 2 for Different Dragons!
I have requests out on various groups for anyone who wants to be on my 'invite' list in the event I need a few fill in stories for the second volume.
Leave me a note on this thread if you might be interested in being on the list.
Thanks!

Put me on the list! If I don't make it to volume 1, I might squeeze into volume 2. :-)

Submitted "Suntosun Shipping" this morning. It's now in the slushpile for when your reading period starts after submissions close. Sounds you're getting a good turnout on the manuscript call, Dana. And very cool that a second volume is a serious possibility! When you make your invitation list, I'd like to be included. And so the wait begins. But it's a busy wait -- got several stories in work and editing to do.

Update: Got submissions forwarded from the publisher and everything is now tracked on my spreadsheet. Yes, she tracks the stories/authors/word count.
Meltalikhan - got yours.
Have 12 submissions so far and am awaiting the other promised stories to come in from various authors I talked to at MileHiCon, including a big name I'm hoping will submit, both me and the publisher talked to him, not to mention someone who is about to sign a 22 book contract with a big house, the Sandbox and the Lost Genre Guild.
Deadline of 12/31/2012 fast approaching. I will start reading in January.
Traditional/high Fantasy Closed! Urban Fantasy still being accepted, along with Steam Punk, Science Fiction, Paranormal, Horror, Mystery, Romance, Mythology, Thrillers, Young Adult, and anything else I may not know of.
